So, does Paul Williams still beat Pavlik?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by LordSharpshire, Dec 19, 2009.

  1. Sounds like Arum and Pavlik still want to do the fight. So, what say you? There were hordes of folks talking **** about Kelly after he lost to B-Hop and I'm still wondering if those same folks still think Paul beats Kelly.

I always had doubts about Williams in that fight because he's never had good defence. All I can see is him and Pavlik trading. In that case you have to favour the guy with the middleweight strength and power. It would be a barnburner no doubt.

Pavlik would want the fight on the outside. Great logic, kid. Go troll somewhere else.

I don't. At his heart, Paul's a fighter- not a boxer. That's not a bad thing and has served him well so far (and I won't miss a fight of his because of it), but against Pavlik he's doing it against the bigger, stronger man. At this point I don't know if Paul can fight any other way, and at Middleweight, trading with Pavlik isn't going to work for him. He just gets hit too damn much, and if you're asking who's chin will hold up longer, I've got to go with Pavlik in a FOTY candidate.

:think Williams doesn't have the movement to do what B-Hop done. He also doesn't have a good enough jab to keep it on the outside with Kelly.

This fight has to happen now. Pavlik proved that he is healthy, they will both make good money, and it's one of the most exciting matchups in boxing. I never thought PW beats Pavlik and tonight changes nothing.

Williams doing a Hopkins is a huge misnomer. Williams has none of that skillset. He can't fight going backwards like Hopkins can, he comes forward, period. His jab rarely has full extension on it, neither do most of his power punches, which is why he's always in punching range of his opponents. If he was using his full height and reach he wouldn't be getting tagged so often in fights. Pavlik and Williams is nothing but two men firing hundreds of punches, there is no science to that fight.

These are my thoughts exactly. It would be completely different a couple years from now though, if Williams was given time to grow into that long frame of his.

I favor Pavlik before and after. I don't see anything to change my opinion.

Obviously not but I think the more pertinent issue is Pavlik looked refreshed and his hand showed no signs of being a problem so we could assume Pavlik is 100% now.
