Fact..... I reviewed Bones Smith in his '93 fight with Moorer last week when Smith was 245 pounds and age 39 knocking on 40, and while Smith was slow and mechanical against Moorer, he looked physically strong and even managed to win "3" whole rds at his advanced age against a prime Moorer who was quite skilled, but not so durable...... I also have Bones Smith's '99 rematch with Larry Holmes on tape too, and Smith at age 46 was 275 pounds with saggy tits and a bald dome up top......... Jesus H., Old Bones looked horrid against Holmes in 1999.... Holmes himself was 250 pounds, but nowhere near as gross looking as Smith was...... Holmes was age 49, but he looked YOUNGER than the 46 year old Smith who aged poorly since his '93 loss to Moorer....... MR.BILL
A bout between Rocky Marciano and James "Bonecrusher" Smith is going to look a lot like the Tyson/Smith bout. Marciano by clear decision in a boring bout.
I remember watching that fight on day time television back in like 93'. I was a freshman in college, and was hung over from the night before. I think it was on abc wide world of sports with Alex Walleau and a few other guys. Smith was actually landing some decent shots that was getting Moorer's attention, while taking a fair number of them himself. This was the fight that left me thinking that the first truly good heavyweight that Moorer fought who could hurt him, would finish him off. About a year later, big George came along.
Smith was trained and motivated for Moorer, but just too slow as usual to win on points...... Yes... it was ABC TV with Alex Wallau and Dan Dierdorf.... I miss them days / daze...... :dealMR.BILL
I guess Old Bones still had some gas in the tank cuz he beat Page later on in '94 or so.... But after Smith's loss to Moorer on ABC TV in 1993, I stopped looking out for Bones Smith and his career.... I figured he was a done deal by 1995 at the most........ Again, his look at 275 in 1999 for Holmes on PPV was sickening, but I still enjoyed seeing Holmes smack around Smith for the 8th round TKO........ MR.BILL
I seen Boneclutcher cluth to a decision loss to Tyson, he could do the same with Rocky but the late rd workrate that Rocky would dish out on him may be a bit more than Smith was made out to handle
I think some folks are selling Old Bones a little short here............... Bones Smith lacked finess and skills, but his pre-age 40 conditioning, strength and power was there..... Again, Bones Smith was physically in-shape in 1993 at 245 pounds for his loss to Moorer on ABC television....... Bones conducted himself well for a man age 40........ I see the much smaller but better all around fighter in Marciano winning a tuff decision over the mechanical but capable Smith in a time machine......... This is NOT a walk in the park for Rocco......... MR.BILL
I agree, I don't think that this would be an easy fight for anyone pre 1960, and nor do I see Smith clinching in a match against Marciano. When Smith fought Tyson, Mike was coming off of some very destructive wins over Thomas and Berbick, Whereas a reigning Marciano was almost beaten by Walcott, and struggled with Moore and Charles. I don't think Smith would have as much fear, and in fact would probably try for the knockout early after seeing the rock get decked early twice. Additionally, with a 7 inch height, and 50 lb weight advantage, he would be by far the largest ( and possibly the hardest hitting ) opponent Marciano ever faced.. I'm not claiming that Smith would win this fight nor should even be the favorite, but I think some are automatically picking Rocky on the basis of legacy and not digging further.
People can scoff or what not, but Tyson in 1987 at age 20 to 21 yrs and 216 to 221 RIPPED pounds of muscle would've tore Marciano's head off and given it back to Rocky inside of "4" rds......... Styles make fights...... Marciano had neither the size or the reach to manhandle Tyson like the hulking Bones Smith did....... Marciano would press Tyson, bob, weave, throw hard punches and get hit in return...... Tyson being bigger and stronger and skilled, clocks Marciano with some clean shots and KO's the 190 pounder in a wild, but short encounter.......... MR.BILLbbb:hat
Tyson Had serious power but at that point was still not in a fight with a fighter who was not afraid of him. We saw what Holyfield did to him and Buster Douglas...Marciano would have had no fear of him and Tyson would have felt some serious power from Marciano and if the fought in the 90's Marciano could have gotten some of that special Juice for himself
