Khan is a fast boxer and maybe he is improved since teaming up with Roach but I am far from convinced that the in built deficiencies he has are curable such as that weak chin.
I'd pick Khan to win this on points. However, I don't get all you who think this is some kinda massive mismatch. It wouldn't make sense financially wise (Khan could get a lot more fighting a name American), but levels wise the two fighters aren't that far apart. Wins over the diminutive past-his-best Barrera, the plodding robotic Kotelnik and the, lets admit it, god awful Salita don't all of a sudden make Khan an elite fighter who only fights the cream of the crop of boxing. McCloskey is a smart fighter and would pose Khan a fair few problems. And you never can tell what will happen if and when McCloskey lands a powerful shot on Khan's chops. The questions regarding Khan's chin still remain; he looks stronger up at LWW, but we still haven't seen him tested by a puncher of comparable size since the Prescott fight. McCloskey doesn't have huge KO power, but he is a hurtful puncher and seems to have developed more of a dig over the last couple of years. It would be an interesting fight.
I heard in Dungiven that as amatuers Khan and McCloskey faught eachother and that McCloskey won. No idea how much truth there is in this though.
They have definitely fought alright, the result I'm not sure of but when Khan was asked about McCloskey and he seemed to have a lot of respect for him. Although Khan also admitted he had seen **** all of McCloskey as a pro.
I'm not sure that that trumps a world title. Its difficult to judge how good McCloskey actually is because he appears to like to feast on fighters who have just come off a loss. He looked good against Lynes, but Lynes heart just wasn't in it (although he came back well to be jobbed against M'baye), and Dean Harrison should not have been in the same ring fighting for a British title. I would be interested at this point seeing how McCloskey did against a rejuvinated and motivated Lynes, or Rees if he stayed at LWW. Fact of the matter is that McCloskey isn't going to get anywhere near Khan for the foreseeable future
Khan is too fast. McCloskey looks average at best on the front foot. McC only has a power chance unless he ups his game massively.
and you know the thing is achilles, McCloskey may actually be able to up his game massively. Paul doesn't train full-time, he can't afford to as he has to look after his business. If he were to get a major fight, or a big sponsor behind him, it may allow him to concentrate fully on preparing himself for a fight and maybe also have a longer training camp. Bring in someone like Mike McGurn(who became Bernard Dunne's strength and conditioning coach before the Cordoba fight and also works with the Irish rugby team) aswell and you never know what sort of improvement we'll see. I would agree that as it is and without improvement, it's unlikely McCloskey would beat Khan, unless he could land that one big shot. Certainly winning by decision would be almost out of the question. Marty that lads got a dirty mouth on him when the cameras are off him, you wouldn't believe the stuff he was saying about yourself
You're right, that's crap. So what is next? Is he mandatory for the WBC now that the Romanian pulled out or does he still have to fight an eliminator?
McCloskey cant crack, kind of flicks, swipes and pushes his punches. not saying hes not decent but its clear to see that his strengths are those sharp reflexes and his awkard style, definately not any kind of power. Hes much more of a malinaggi type than a banger. If Frank manages to keep hold of Khan, this would be a fight hes keen on.
