Who are some fighters who rely too much on their talent (speed reflexs) and will definetly be feeling it when they become older. Fighters like roy jones, jermaine taylor ect... But keep in mind their are other fighters who still keep some of these senses like toney or hopkins :think
Zab! He could have been this era's version of Sweet Pea with POWER! But he doesn't train the way guys like Manny and Floyd and relies so much on his natrual ability and gifts to do what he does. He's got a very good resume, but has come up short in some of his biggest fights.
1st name I thought of. Not that Guzman and Casa are bad picks, but neither has been terribly prominent or relevant of late. Also, Joel can fall back on solid fundamentals when he has to. Obviously it diminishes his overall ability but he does have them.
Also, how about some fighters who rely too much on their chin until it gets ruined??? I think hatton fits in here. Thats why he was never succesful at welter, he couldnt use his natural strength and chin to intimidate. Because he wasnt a beast like he was at 140, his strength was above average
Joe Calzaghe never trained properly....ever. Never used any sparring partners besides Enzo Maccarinelli and Nathan Cleverly etc....the other people at his shanty hut gym. Never done any strength training or weights. Never dieted, hell you see him eating bacon and egg sandwhiches every morning on the Countdown video's. Hell even in his book it says rather than watch what he ate he just ate less...wtf lol. The move up to 175 was another good one, rather than build up to 175 he simply didnt drop the last 7lbs thereby losing as much natural advantage as possible.
I swear Iwas watching the Diaconu fights and thinking ''when this man's speed and reflexes give out he will be a punching bag''. Casa showed this in his last outing perfectly. If Jason Davis had any ring cutting abilities and power he would have won. Same with Guzman.
Gamboa... He still has time to develop some skill, but from the three or four fights I have seen of his, I find myself coming away thinking he is just beating guys on speed, power and reflexes. Obviously those attributes will take u far, but when u fight guys like mayweather and hopkins (technicians)... most likely u will lose.
His stamina and ability to take a punch more than speed or reflexes though. Once his chin starts to deteriorate and he can no longer throw 1,000 punches he'll struggle.
Wow....had no idea. it just proves how incredibly talented Joe was. Too bad he never really applied himself to seek out challenges in his prime to secure an even better legacy for himself.
