It was actually a well-made doc. It's just that people lack logic and perspective.

The episode shows Taylor taking a bad beating, saying he had diminished performances after the ring, and eventually shows him brain damaged years later.

To these wonderful posters with all the logic in the world, that somehow equals to

"Taylor got brain damaged from this fight alone and was never any good again!!"!

Exactly, good call. Taylor was in a much worse state than Mayorga and to risk letting him take a flush shot when he ain't got his wits about him in case he COULD have made it to the bell IMO would be foolish for any ref as well as incompetant.

It's hard to see Taylor fighting bums and being all punch drunk in that documentary, I know, but he might not even be able to walk if that fight had continued, then Richard Steel would have made the WORST decision ever.

It was a just stoppage...very hard to deal with if you were a Taylor fan at the time.

But, if the fighter is unable to continue, you must stop the fight...right?

Regardless of how much time is left. If the fight had continued, there would have been controversy either way. He was out on his feet. i felt that the Corrales/Castillo I stoppage was worse. Taylor was hurt far worse than Castillo.

Because it was not a normal situation and you know that. What you say is all logical and true. But you forgot to mention that there were only a few seconds left, which makes it less uncontroversial then you imply here.

One of the most subtle beatings of all time. The stoppage was pretty unfortunate, although not altogether unjustifiable. Either way, I think Chavez proved he was the superior fighter.

the ref must treat the last second of the fight as if it's the rest of the seconds of the fight ... from bell to bell each second is the same!

Don't buy this **** at all. If Taylor stayed on his feet for the last 5 seconds he wins the fight. Steele wouldn't have had a say in the outcome.

What do you want the ref to do, check his watch before starting the count ?

If there were 10 secs left rather than 2, Taylor gets stopped & probably heavily, just because there was 2 seconds doesnt switch it from a good stoppage to a bad one, why should it ?

What do you mean with ''forgetting'' exactly?

I think it's clear: EVEN if Steele would've let Meldrick continue, Chavez was not going to land a punch on him anymore. So fact is, is that it was and remains a controversial decision.

Yes, I thought it was a horrible stoppage then, when I saw the fight as it happened, and I still think so today. And it wasn't the only time Steele pulled a questionable move to give a Don King fighter a disputed victory either.

Steele STOLE Taylor's victory from him, pure and simple. One of the worst "robberies" of all time in boxing.

It was a terrible, terrible stoppage. Whoever debate's that is a fool. Their was like 2 seconds left or something stupid. He got up after about 4 seconds of the knockdown, nodded at the ref, then it was stopped. Terrible.
