Marciano's Thoughts on Sonny Liston

Marciano's last fight was in '55 and he retired in '56. Liston was far from ready at that point. Had Rocky come back in the very late 50's or early 60's to fight Liston it would have been a good fight. Marciano hopefully would have had a couple of tune-ups first.

...plus, Norton was washed up. Shavers had power but he had trouble landing clean sometimes. The men you mentioned were great finishers.

 

Those were just names off the top of my head. By no means was it meant to be comprehensive.

Now, would you care to explain how and why Marciano ranks among the biggest punchers @ HW all time?

 

Dude your forgetting that Ali KOed a physical prime Quarry. He must hit way harder than Shavers.

 

TKO, Ali won on cuts. Its not like Ali flatten him.

There is still arugment, mostly from Quarry, that he could have gone on.

I sure had there fights happen in the 50's and early, it perhaps goes the full 15 route.

Which relly brings me to the Cockell thing with Valez, Like Jerry, Cockell was not flatten by Valez, Cockell got a cut busted open over the eye, and the ref stop it shortly after that.

Marciano didnt relly cut Cockell like Valez did, and had to pound him like a battler ram or something.

I dont think the Marciano TKO 9 Cockell and Valez TKO 3 relly tells who hit harder between the 2 imo. Both fights play out differnly.

Giving the chance, I pretty sure Cockell would have last longer vs Valez.

 

Absolutely. It was also a very sloppy Marciano performance, coming off a career threatening facial injury forced layoff. Just too many variables to consider before drawing a conclusion on something as vaguely measurable as punching power. Valdez couldn't stop Moore in two occassions and got beat up pretty bad by him, and we know how Marciano/Moore turned out. Most articles I've read on the second Moore/Valdez fight have Valdez getting rocked early and going into a defensive shell unwilling to throw his right hand out of fear of being countered and knocked out by the Mongoose.

 

Sure which is why, in his very next fight, Cockell gets KO'ed in all of two rounds by the venerable Kitione Lave.

 

look at the u-tube I posted and watch the Layne,Moore,Charles,Walcott,Matthews and Lastarza KO's and then tell me the man was not a puncher....I need a good laugh....

 

Don't try to move the goal posts.

Nobody ever denied that that man was a puncher and nobody ever denied that he has good puncing power.

He's just not among the elite in the HW division as far as punching power goes...

 

In terms of one-punch, early round pop, he's not up there with Lewis, Tua, Tyson, Foreman and Shavers if that's as big as your elite class goes. However, he was an extremely tenacious, unrelenting puncher who retained clout until the final bell. In this regard he is the master of all the above.

Ask yourself, who would you rather not face in the 13th round, Shavers, Tua, Tyson, Foreman, Lewis or Marciano? I know my answer.

 

I think Marciano has better 1 punch KO power. Those other guys might be able to club people down better, but when Marciano put someone down, it usually took a special kind of fighter to get up more than once or twice.
