How great do you feel he actually was? And were should he be ranked on a ATG List? Some Info On Him......... http://coxscorner.tripod.com/dixon.html
You could make a case for him being the GOAT pound for pound. Some contemporary evidence indicates that he had more title defences than Joe Louis. As an old and arguably shot fighter he gave Terry McGovern a competitive fight while he was walking through the best of the era like Pedlar Palmer and Frank Erne.
I have him a lot higher than most would because I suppose I have more faith in the contemporary accounts of his record. His Boxrec does him absolutely no justice whatsoever, considering the number of robberies he was on the receiving end of, as well as the incompleteness of his record in general. By the accounts of his day he was without peer in the boxing world, the best P4P fighter in a sensational era. I may be one of few who has him in serious contention for a top 10 placing all time.
This is a interesting little bit on him..... Callis also wrote, Dixon won nearly 90 percent of the draws and losses on his record but due to various reasons he did not get credit for a win; e.g. racial attitude of the times judged him as loser instead of winner (in some bouts), he had to carry opponents in order to get fights, as well as specific rules for a given fight - i.e. the verdict would be draw if no knockout was scored. This fact is supported even by the white press of the period. The Sept. 30, 1893 Police Gazette reported Nearly every time Dixon has been pitted against a champion, no matter whether foreign or native, the majority has named Dixon the loser, probably through prejudice, owing to his color, yet he has won.
He faced and beat (or should've, anyway) much better fighters on the whole, at least that much about him is documented. Not to mention I simply haven't warmed up to those two. I'm sure in time I will, I always do.
You have made 15 thousand posts and virtually all have been crap posts in which you just look to fill your post count up. Every time a old time fighters is discussed you say I dont know much on him and need to reserach on him. Well instead of writing constant crap why dont you actually go and do that research your always saying you will do.
He beat up his fair share of stiffs I think, same as Jack and Jack. Meanwhile Jack is unbeaten and other Jack put together some hot streak. You're going to have to toss up, for me, one day soon, specific fights that stand as losses on his records that are specifically wins. And I'd like to see Walker-Flowers style robberies where almost nobody ringside disagrees...another day maybe.
Probably just because I haven't devoted enough time to researching them. Both were obviously excellent fighters, just not proven conclusively enough for me to highly rate at the moment. I feel otherwise about Dixon.
Not to answer for Pea, but Dixon is a much more interesting character. The two Jacks had it handed to them on a platter (As much as men who fight 40 rounds ever do) and MacAullife had a couple he certainly would have dropped were he a man of colour, for example. For what it's worth.
