Sweet Pea i respect you and your opinions, and i always enjoy reading your thorough and educated posts .. I dont quite know how this Tunney thing started but i concede i may have gone overboard here, but ive had a great laugh with this .. Anyone know how this thread changed from Robinson and Armstrong to Gene Tunney, i've totall forgotten ....

I'd like to apologise to Gpater the 'op', to Sweet Pea and to all the other guys on Classic Forum .... I'd still like anybody to give Tunney credit but maybe that will come in another thread, Pro Greb and Pro Dempsey threads are a dime a dozen .....

Sweet Pea i demand you give me a detailed analysis on Duran v Whitaker, i think Whitaker has got the unorthodox silky skills to deal with Duran, but he'd be taken care of by Curry .....

I gotta go now, someones attempting to steal my 'Hagler Material', im sick of this, only last week some dirty thief ran off with my 'Marciano Material' ....

If he did lose to Curry, it most certainly wouldn't be by knockout. The suggestion in itself is pretty laughable. An old, shot, coked out Whitaker was beaten relentlessly for the last 5 rounds by a much harder hitter than Curry in Felix Trinidad, and still managed to survive. Yet you think a prime Whitaker gets pasted by the same Curry who went tit for tat with Marlon Starling in their two fights? I can't envision it. I see that one as a 50/50 bout, but there certainly wouldn't be a stoppage in either fighter's favor.

As for Whitaker/Duran, I've done it before in detail. However, my opinions are constantly fluctuating, and I'm at a loss to pick a winner in that matchup at the moment. I'll get back to you.

I agree that you've just agreed with me, and thankyou very much for giving Gene some respect .. That was all i asked, Tunney did in fact 'beat' Greb 4 times, and that is a fact .. Were there controversies ?? Yes without a doubt, i never disputed that but the 'fact' remains Tunney is on the record as having 4 wins over Greb .... I didnt see the second fight, you didnt see the second fight, and we've both probably read the same articles about the fight .. Now you can convince yourself til your dying day that Greb was the greatest fighter on the planet but your basing that on the written word, your not basing that on the actual footage that you've seen .... This is were your argument falls down my young friend, Greb is an 'Untouchable', there is no footage for analysis, just stories and articles and testimony from people who seen him fight ..
Unless you are 120 years old, you cannot tell me anything about the Greb v Tunney fights that im not aware of ....

Your argument is ridiculous, we both agree Greb was a great fighter, we both agree that 'newspaper decisions' back then were often open to question, but were we disagree is that you wont give Gene Tunney any credit for ad******g his gameplan and tactics to combat Greb after he got worked over in the first fight .. Your very happy to say Greb beat Tunney in fight 1, then you use an excuse saying ' Fight 2 was a newspaper decision, obviously bull****' and then in the next 2 fights im presuming your blaming Greb's defeats to Tunney on his bad eye ?? Am i right ??

Your a zealot, im a Greb fan, im a Dempsey fan, im a Tunney fan, but more than that, im a true boxing fan that likes to give credit to fighters, your a fan who gives credit to fighters that you like and shoots down other fighters to suit your own agenda .... Give Greb tremendous credit for being the legend that he was but save a few words for Tunney, thats all i ask ....

Did you mention, 'Destroying an argument?', what argument were you making ?? I think i missed it :patsch

I like Curry against Whitaker, Curry at his best was an aesthetically beautiful fighter, but his constant weight draining took its toll .. I dont buy the Curry/Trinidad comparison, Trinidad was way over-rated for me, Curry at his best is a far more dangerous opponent for Whitaker .. You may be right about the KO, it would have to be a perfectly timed shot to tag Pernell but a Prime Curry is certainly a man that could do it .... I'd still stick my neck out and go Curry to KO him, Hearns to KO him and Ray Leonard to stop him at some point, yeah im happy with that, Welterweight against these guys would be dangerous territory for Pernell ..

You know the heartache it causes when some ******* steals your 'Material', Jack Cavanuagh stole yours, this naked guy stole mine .. I feel your pain man

Tunney had his nipples bitten off by a rabid beaver 3 days before this fight, and the whole planet knows Greb had one eye, so the guys judging decided, 'wow theres just too many excuses if somebody loses this, lets give it a draw and go for a beer'

That is a true story that ive read, the article was written by Johnny ' TNT' Lewis, who was ringside for the fight ....

    Thats the true story

I have Robinson at number 1 and Armstrong 2. They both have great resumes and have titles in multiple weight classes but I think Robinsons longevity is what separates the two.

Its said Robinson carried Armstrong either for MOB pay or because Armstrong was his hero, still it was a shut out. Armstrong wasnt as far from prime as is made out either and no he wasnt old, he had some of his best career wins around this time
