His win over Zamora is a very good win, at the time Zamora was seen to be pretty indestructable with an undefeated record and all KOs if i remember right. Zarate destroyed him. This ruined Zamora hence why he never went on to do much.

Also he is on film one of the best Bantamweight champs ever seen and that counts for something hes up there with Olivares, Jofre, Rose etc...

Also about the 2-3 record if you knew about boxing at that time records could be shady as hell and very hard to confirm records that 5 fights is just the fights confirmed by Boxrec.

Bits in bold: Make up your mind 2 or 3 bids. Also Gomez was an absouloutly brillaint fighter and Zarate was slightly past it no shame in it.

 

The Gomez fight is very weird with one guy sick and the other overweight.

Plus Gomez hit Zarate when he was down....if Gomez had done that in Las Vegas he would have been DQ'ed and Zarate would have won.

you are right his record is bum filled. but he was fighting in 70's pre-computer ranking mexico where it was common for journeyman to have rancho fights. he didnt have much of an amatuer career either.

he is one of those fighters that i judge by how he beat his opponants. the zamora fight was a world title fight in spirit. both the wba and the wbc were asking for 20% of the purse.

it's a shame becuase he got shafted by politics and when he did get exposure it was too late.

I dont think he is top 50 for a start.

But saying his competition at bantam was mediocre is very, very far off the mark.

Along with Hec Thompson and Dave Sands, Paul Ferrari is among the best fighters Australia had produced that never won a title. They would have most defintely picked up a trinket in the multi belt era and Paul would have beaten at least half the titlists that have shared the bantam straps in the last decade.
He was an excellent fighter and acquitted himself very well against a prime Zarate.

Guys like Davila and Martinez were top notch operators. And the way Carlos dealt with them just makes his wins over them that much more impressive.
Martinez was coming off an impressive string of wins..traveling all over the world to defend his title and really jumping into the cauldron against the very impressive Borkhosor in Thailand.
No one came close to beating Davila like that again and the only person to do it before was a young Wilfredo Gomez. Alberto was a very good fighter who was just unfortunate to have to share the division with some truly great fighters during his career.

Zamora's credentials have already been covered.

For quality and dominance, not so much longevity or quantity, Zarate's reign at bantam is among the best.

 

He hit him while he was down and spat on him. If I were Zarate I know I would not have responded the way he did.

 

I'm massive on Zarate. He's my man in the Bantams. One other point is that in reality he beat Pintor too.

 

He fought around 30 "boxers" with only 1 fight on their record, a fight with Zarate.
His resume is pure garbage.
3 year reign as WBC world champion.
A boxer with his resume should be borderline HOF not ATG.

Guys like Pintor and Davilla would easily be top 10 p4p in this hack era. Zamora and Martinez might be too. Ferreri would probably win a belt or two as well.

Carlos doesn't have the best resume amongst all time greats but he was pretty dominant up to his first retirement and did beat some decent fighters along the way.

 

i just read my post and i sound like he didnt earn it. just to fix up (and look sharp supposedly) he was fighting guys with poor records but it is just a amatuer background to the game. before the mid 80's it was very common for fighters to fight for money but not to be put on a record. which is why those guys have such unimpressive records. javier varguez said to have fought 100+ times more than his record.

he was certainly world class and the way he destroyed opposition is incredible. no doubt he could bang. and could box well. should of got the win over pintor. and a rematch with gomez in a more fairer enviroment.

 

Davila was a terrific fighter who could fight with anyone. And people throw around top 50 w/ ease, but if you truly know the deep history of the sport, there were SO many greats that making a top 50 is nearly impossible for sure. I could name 100 fighters off the top of my head that could be top 50.:smoke

 

Recall reading some 30 yrs ago the opinion of the gent below who was considered the Ray Arcel of Mexican boxing, who would beat who in their respective primes Zarate or Ruben Olivares, Coyo siad Zarate!
