I dont notice that perception from people Rock. But regardless you are right i thought the division was very good when Zarate was there. I thought it was a helluva alot better than when Canizales was there.

Far from "average" which is what your called it Addie...Quite strong to tell you the truth. Especially when you consider the up and comers that Carlos didnt get a chance to fight.

Bantamweight wasn't bad in the 90s, Canizales just didn't face Vasquez and Jones when he should have.

Addie just called it average..which isnt so bad, he was only really trying to make the distinction is wasnt the greatest the divvy has seen..just poor choice of words.

The other Zarate thread several posts rubbish the division at the time...one poster called it garbage.

Yey you are right, i guess i should have said Canizales Cometition. Raul Jibaro Perez was another one that was champ at the same time as Orlando in fact Perez was a top 10 pfp around that time byKO and Ring Magazine.

No chance mate. Canizales did look sweet on film, of that there is no doubt, but he certainly did not prove it at the highest level to the same extent that MAB did. Could Canizales have outfought someone of Morales's calibre then dominated a beast like Hamed? No, he could not, despite his aesthetic merits. Just look at his resume for the evidence. Barrera was a superior fighter.

    :D Yep.

Am I the only one who doesn't even think this is particularly close?? :huh

    It's easily MAB.

Zarate won his world title, had a decent run of defences against a mix of good solid challengers and nondescript randoms, got blasted out by Gomez, outpointed by Pintor, and never regained his former status.

How does that in any way to compare to Barrera's career?!

Hold on, Zarate did fight in a good Bantamweight division.

Zamora, Davila, Rodolfo Martinez, Pintor, are all decent scalps (I personally feel he did enough to beat Pintor, if not a win then at least indicative of his ability to mix it with top Bantams, of which Pintor is one; the fight is not reflective of either of their best performances mind) and Batista seems a very good operator up until Zarate ruins him.

These are just going on the fights I've seen. There are some patsys on his record but the defences were usually to a decent opposition and if you consider that another fighter who reached his peak as a dominant featherweight, Pedroza, was starched by Zamora (does film of it exist?) it gives you an idea of what kinda' level zamora was at. A super puncher, undefeated phenom, decent enough credentials (the film of Zamora shows everything you need to know about the guy, he was a Demon puncher) a good win for Zarate, especially when you consider the high intensity they fought at.

Personally though I'd rate Barrera a few places higher on my P4P list. I'm not that impressed with weight jumping unless it contains real quality, and Barrera's did. As always, fighters gain kudos in losing efforts, and even up to 130 Barrera showed his class.

I feel he got the better of Morales in their series, dominated the undefeated Hamed (regardless of how I feel Naz had slipped a bit, a solid win)has decent tenures up to super feather and usually made up for his inconsistencies with solid follow-up performances.

I also like Barrera on a technical level. I like how Zarate arched his big frame into his punches, and how he throws the leeft hook off the jab, mixing shots to head and body etc etc

But I really like Barrera's combinations; the left hook/uppercut. His adaptibility throughout his career and eventual technical prowress.

It's tight between them though. They both did totally different things equally well. If you asked me tomorrow I might say Zarate

They probably both feature in the 60-75 mark of my P4P list.

The good solid challengers were very good IMO.

Getting annihilated by Gomez at 122 is a given for most

The Pintor fight is not a huge robbery but if it's still on youtube, I think it's clear that Zarate gets the better of the fight. And from the pre-Zarate fights I've seen of Pintor at 118, he looks **** hot. And gives a good account of himself at super-bantam against Gomez of course.

Zarate was damn good. Popkins, you're a guy who backs up his claims.

Off the top of your head, where would each figure in a top 100?
