Calz vs Hop-- Divided more or less along UK-US lines?

Haven't watched it again it was a bag of shite Don't even think it was particularly close either

 

I don't think its divided along UK/US lines at all.

I'm British, think Hopkins won. Many in the Brit forum I think feel the same.

But honestly, I don't think either guy won clearly.

At the end of the day, Calzaghe has a 'w' over Hopkins, thats what history will record.

 

If I remember correctly, Joe bent Bhop over and made him his ***** right there in the middle of the ring. Jailhouse style. That there should give him the win.

Seriously? I'm from Australia, had Joe winning a boring fight.

 

I am Canadian and I thought Bhop won by 1-2 points. It could have gone either way but I thought Joe only slapped all night. Mind you a hard slap can hurt as much as a punch. It was close enough that it should have had a rematch but boring enough that no one would have watched.

 

I thought Calzaghe pulled off a decision by one or two rounds...but I haven't watched it in a while. So I'm watching it again to see how I score it now. We'll see...

 

Split down the middle.

Fools (people scoing it Hopkins or close to Calzaghe) and non-Fools (wide for Calzaghe).

It is just bitter Americans who can not get over the fact the Joe is, and always ways, a better boxer than Hopkins.

Of course it was unimpressive - he was fighting Hopkins.

Dont forget the fight was in the USA.

If Joe was American then people would be lining up to praise him - but being from Britian and no beating enough Americans makes it hard for people in the USA to accept how good he was.

It is a universal fact on these boards that Hopkins is a great fighter - and still is top 10 P4P. How people can accept that so easily but not accept that Joe is his equal or better must come down to national pride and nothing else.

So Calzaghe did not give Hopkins a rematch? who needed the rematch more? who was a total **** during the pre fight build up showing zero respect?

So Hopkins was past him prime? It is not like Joe was in his prime, FFS he could not even punch much due to his bad hands.

Styles make fights and in Calzaghe v Hopkins you had the guy with the most akward style fighting the guy who could adapt to any style --- the win was the guy who could adapt, no robbery just a close decision.

 

British, Calzaghe (A close fight though, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who believes that Hopkins won )

Just trying to cover some of the things people say in advance.

 

American. I think Bhops won the first half of the fight, Calzaghe won the second half. Joe obviously took over the fight, but scoring wise too close. I think I gave Calzaghe a round or two at most. Calzaghe won, but just barely. Pretty convinient to retire when Hopkins wanted the rematch and Joe's answer was "What for?" Because even though it was a great victory for Joe, it was an ugly win in which Hopkins was schooling him badly and many people thought Joe lost that's what for. It has nothing to do with Hopkins being American, but many harry potters here think otherwise.

sure, Joe is great. But this is a fight that should of taken years ago. Benn, Eubanks, McCallum, were very good, but never in Jones, Hopkins, or Toney's level in their primes. The simple reason to this is not because the latter is American, but because they were p4p rulers at some point.

That is why many British fighter might not get the respect, not simply because they are British. Lewis, Hatton, Haye, and Calzaghe have been p4p in the past, and even though I'm not a huge fan of Calzaghe, I do respect the man and admit he edged a close victory over Hopkins. But to say he is a better boxer or fighter is ridiculous. A rematch would of cleared any doubt of this and if Joe would of dominated Hopkins throughtout the whole fight then he really would of been that great of a fighter and made alot more fans for taking the rematch. Instead he is tootin on some horn and left many doubts.
