Is Buddy Mcgirt The Worst Championship Level Trainer Ever?

Yeah, I'm sure Buddy's a nice guy, but he's in the losing corner of just about every fight he's involved in.

 

He did great things with Gatti

 

i was going to say worse trainer ever but i don't think thats fair...


but on a championship level... i can't even imagine someone being worse than he is

 

Brewster vs Wlad rematch....no trainer was gonna stop that beating from happening
Tarver vs Hopkins.....Nothing any trainer could have done. Tarver was in movie star mode, asking how his face looked in between rounds.
Gatti vs Floyd.....Don't evens pretend any trainer could have helped Gatti in that massacre.

 

Hes definetly worst for the decade at the championship level, the sad part is top fighters are still coming up to him/

 

Buddy is a good trainer, he's fighters are just not cut out for the top level.

 

He's not the worst trainer in general, but of champion level guys, yes.

 

I'm not going to criticise McGirt as he was a championship level fighter in his day, thus that means he knows more about training fighters than I what I know!

The results of his fighters might leave a bit to be desired, but when all is said & done, its the fighter who goes in there, not the trainer.

For example, Freddy Roach has turned Pacquiao into a formidable fighter, but Manny was champion prior to hooking up with Roach. No doubt Roach has improved him, but, although we wil never know for sure, other great trainers would have improved Pacquiao had they worked with him!

McGirt did wonders with Gatti & he has to be given respect for that. Paulie Malignaggi has no class at all by some of the comments he has made in respect of Buddy. Malignaggi lost to Hatton becasue Ricky ywas better on the night, plain & simple.

Next thing you know, Paulie will be blaming his trainer for the loss to Cotto. Even though Cotto broek his jaw & gave him a beating. This guy is ridiculous.

 

Except the moment Tarver knocked Jones cold, that was probably Mcgirt's best moment as a trainer .

Too bad, Buddy was a good fighter himself, even a top p4p fighter some time, but it's not 'cause you're a good boxer that you're a good teacher:yep

Even in the 2nd fight when McCall allowed Lewis to tee off on him as if he was a heavy bag..... never even hurt once, or close to being hurt.

Good fighters are not always good teachers...

 

Yes they could've. It may not have made that much of a difference but it does help if a trainer is giving confidence, motivation & encouragement in the corner and most importantly INSTRUCTION. Buddy gives none of those. He tells you the obvious. In other words put yourself in Brewsters shoes for a sec let's say at the end of round 4.

You're getting jabbed to death, things aren't looking good. What would be better for you to hear in between rounds? Buddy's " You're losing man, if this goes any further i'm going to stop it?" Again stating the obvious. Or the alternative which is what makes emmanuel steward a great trainer. Who in between rounds will tell you something along the lines of this..... "relax, we can turn this around , you just need to do this , that and the other" Giving instruction . Best case would be Jonathan banks vs. Castillo. In rd 1 , banks was being outclassed and hit the canvas twice. Did Manny panic in the corner? No! he calmed jonathan down and gave clear instructions on how to turn things around and he did just that.

Buddy in that same scenario would've thrown in the towel. Sorry about the length but I wanted to explain that. Buddy is not good to have in your corner on fight day. He may be great in training leading up to the fight but on fight day. I vote NO

 

He did exactly that. Don't you remember him blaming his corner in the Cotto fight for not telling him the fight was closer in the final rounds? That's what led him to hire McGirt in the first place.

 

Also want to add that every trainer has their niche. to be a little fair I think Buddy would be a great trainer for a defensive fighter much like he was when fighting. So I think Buddy would be great for someone like Winky Wright or Kevin Johnson. Defensive , elusive fighters who already have the talent of not getting hit , they just need direction how to find openings mount an offense. For this type fighter, Buddy is good.
But if you're a brawler or speedy boxer, A chris arreola, David Tua, Lamon Brewster type. Stay far away from Buddy, it Won't work out for you.
