Bowe never fought a puncher

I never thought much of him either ,and was glad Bowe took him out ,but I think he could bang a bit.

 

Somewhat yes. But I don't how good of puncher he really was. I remember many years ago, I was with some friends watching Holyfield vs Bowe II. Gonzalez fought Snipes on the undercard of that fight. Gonzalez had numerous opportunities to take out Renaldo, but never capitalized on any of them. The ref finally waved the fight off at the end of the 10th,

 

Well he was exposed by Bowe who beat the tar out of him, but up until that point he had a pretty good knockout record although against questionable opposition.

 

True his opposition was questionable, in fact after his 6th rd KO loss to Bowe he was KO'd by Witherspoon in 5, Ross Purity in 7,Michael Grant in 1, Cliff Couser in 3, Joe Mesi in 4 and Derrick Bryant in 1, he did manage to go the distance in a 10 rd loss to Pea Wolfgramm but Gonzales was an opposing looking guy..6"7 250 and bald with a mohawk

 

I always felt the Bowe fight mentally destroyed him. If you watch the prefight lead up to the Bowe fight he almost convinced everyone he would have a shot against Bowe. He had beaten Bowe in the amatuers and unleashed one of the most vile pre fight campaigns on an opponent before the fight I had ever seen. These guys were throwing water glasses at each other during the press conference and Gonzalez talked so much trash it was unbelieveable.
Bowe wasnt having any of it. He knew what Gonzalez was and what he had become as a pro, and it showed in the fight. Completely outclassed him and beat him to shreds.
Gonzalez took one of the worst beatings Ive ever seen, and I was shocked that Gonzalez even fought on after that fight, but by what he took in the Bowe fight and how easily he got pummeled in the future it was pretty easy to tell why he was still fighting.

One question.....

How did Rock Newman come to be his manager?

For some reason he maintains that he did the right thing with Bowe..... the world tour, dumping the WBC etc.

Bowe was later declared bankrupt.... his manager steered him away from a mega payday vs Lewis, there could have been a rematch, there was a Holyfield rematch, Bruno, Ruddock, Morrison around at the time.

Shame.

 

Bowe had a solid chin.....if anything, the Golota fights showed Bowe had a solid chin.

Golota threw everything including the kitchen sink at Bowe in the first fight and he still didn't go down(legally).

Sure, Golota aint a monster puncher like Foreman or Tyson were in thier day, but Golota had very solid power and that isn't disputable. Some of those shots Golota landed on Bowe would of defiantly knocked down, if not out, a lot of fighters throwout history.

Maybe you're right, Bowe didn't have a great chin,but he sure didn't know his limitations, as you can tell anytime you see a interview by him. His speech is literally ****ed for life. Bowe just didn't know when to quit when he should of. His heart saved him in that fight.

In the second fight Bowe got literally ****ed up by Golota's power punches...The Bowe-Golota II fight holds the record for the most power punches ever landed on a HW...and Bowe still didnt quit. Some of those (legal) knockdowns would of defiantly stopped a lot of fighters. Bowe was there for the opening and Golota capitalized on the opportunities. Again, Bowe's will and determination to finish the fight saved him once again.

Bowe didn't need a chin, cause he had the will and determination to overcome power punches, unfortunately for him..

 

Thats a good question, I dont know how they met, but Newman was a fast talking salesman into boxing and was involved in the upper crust of the black community. ( I still dont know if the guy is black or white)??
Either way he did ok securing that huge HBO contract but certainly he took too much emphasis off being a fighter and was trying to make Bowe some sort of worldwide celebrity which was a bad move given Bowes lazy ways.
Bowe openly admits leaving boxing with 10 plus million in the bank, but he spent it all which is hard to imagine considering you can live pretty good off the interest. certainly better than selling autgraphed pictures at the local flea market which he was doing not too long ago. It is a sad deal, but then again a lot of them end up the same way.

 

Bowe had a good but not great chin ... there is no doubt Newman wanted him nowhere near Lennox in the ring as Lennox destroyed him in the Olympics ...

Cooper was a big puncher, just an inconsistent, drugged out fighter. If he hit Bowe he could have hurt him.

I personally feel a prime Bowe from Holyfield was an amazing fighter, far better than Lennox but I just don't think his chin could hold up against Lennox. I also , without question feel Bowe had the power to flatten Lennox.

 

I never really liked Bowe but at his best he was a great fighter. He doesn't have the resume of Lewis or Holyfield but on his best day I think would have had a great chance vs. Lewis (in the pros).

The Tubbs fight could have went either way.

Golota should have beat him at least once, maybe twice. Bowe did hurt Golota a lot in their rematch. Both men took a lot of punishment.

He went 2-1 vs. Holyfield. He was great in the first fight when a cocky Holyfield underestimated him.

He came in a bit lazy in the rematch and a well prepared Holyfield outhustled him... he may have even been stopped had "FanMan" not caused a break in the fight.

He was in decent shope for the rubber match but Holyfield was not. Bowe was down and almost stopped in the 6th but was able to continue. He stopped Holyfield in 8.

I would like to say that Bowe was a dirty fighter though. He landed many lowblows vs. Coetzer on way to stopping him in 7. Coetzer was actually complaining about the fouls as Bowe was landing the combination that would cause the stoppage.

Vs. Holyfield he landed countless lowblows but never lost a point until the 3rd fight. Even the knockdown of Holyfield in their first fight was to the back of the head... not Bowe's fault but the knockdown should not have counted.

He fouled often vs. Tillery... to the point that Tillery decided to kick him. It ended as a DQ win for Bowe and set up a rematch.

He hit Buster Mathis Jr. while he was already down and the fight was ruled a NC... Roy Jones was DQd for doing the same thing vs. Griffin.

Bowe remains 1 out of only HW Champs who were never stopped. Tunney, Marciano, Toney (he was the champ for a second even if the fight was later changed to a NC), Valuev, Ibragimov (if you count the WBO)... the point is that only a few HW titlist were never stopped.

 

As for Lennox destroying Bowe as an amateur? Sure, he beat him by stoppage but keep in mind he never even put him down and Bowe was still steady on his feet.

Despite his cheating and that 1 round where he got a KD, he was getting ****ed up.

 

Fair assessment although if I remember correctly it was Bowe who was on a nice rally before the fan man.
Bowe could be a bit dirty, I think alot of those low blows were more because he threw a lot of uppercuts in close but he was one of the most mean spirited fighters in the ring but a big teddybear outside of it. **** all the top fighters were dirty in their own ways. Bowe also held and hit on the inside, Tyson elbowed, Holy butted, and Lewis leaned on guys necks. They were all savvy to get some sort of advantage.
Its nice to hear someone comment on other fights besides Golota, Holy and Tubbs. Tubbs was a nice step up in challenge for Bowe BTW at that point in his career. :good
