"Great" fights you consider overrated?

Chavez v Taylor 1, good fight, great performance from Taylor, but fight of the decade?

 

I love that fight, it had everything for me. Fight of the decade maybe not but still a tremendous fight.

Morales vs Barrera 3 - just a good action fight lacked the intensity and skillset of the 1st fight

Vasquez vs Marquez 1 & 2 - again good action fights but no the greatest fights althought the third is classic

Arguello vs Pryor 2 - One sided and nowhere near as good a sthe first fight

 

Tyson Holyfield. It was a big wrestling match with a few punches mixed in.

 

ali vs frazier, all 3 of them.ali was past his prime,and the fights were mostly rope a dopes.
hagler hearns went for 3 rounds.
vasquez marquez all 3 , no defence whatsoever from either fighter, just like an all out massacre

I can't believe some of u didnt like enjoy gatti ward I ! that was one of the best fights I have seen.along with bowe holyfield III.

 

Barrera vs. Morales III is magical. The skill level was off the roof, and there was still more than enough action to rightfully award it FOTY honors.

Overrated "great" fights - Aturo Gatti vs Micky Ward I, Israel Vasquez vs Rafael Marquez III, Ray Leonard vs Roberto Duran I.

 

Sorry but calling Ali/Frazier I overrated and then talking up Gatti/Ward I is comedy gold. COMEDY!

 

Loved Barrera v Morales 111, not quite as intense as the first fight, but a great fight nonetheless.

 

I think the entire Gatti vs Ward trilogy is overrated. One good fight, two pretty average affairs.

I'd agree with the poster that said Marquez vs Vazquez III is overrated, but I would say their first two fights are underrated, or forgotten perhaps - especially the 1st, a clinical display of a boxer puncher outfighting a relentless foe.

 

How is Gatti/Ward I over-rated?! Man, your standards must be ****ing high. Unless you define greatness in terms of significance.

 

Leonard-Hearns 1. Great fighters in their prime, great shifts in momentum and strategy, very inconsistent in terms of action.

Hagler-Hearns. Terrific short fight, but I wouldn't rank it that high on my list. A lot of people say you had to see it live, which I can understand (although I've seen other fights taped and knowing the result that I consider easily better than Hagler-Hearns).

Gatti-Ward trilogy. Fight one was excellent. Fight two was alright, a schooling, and fight three was pretty good, but also rather one-sided.

I remember Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant calling De La Hoya-Quartey a "tremendous fight" and others here say it was a great fight. WTF? It was two exciting rounds and ten rounds of posing.

 

Agree on all three counts. The only precedent for ranking Leonard/Hearns so highly was, I suppose, its importance. Hagler/Hearns is supposed to be massively brutal, but I can think of a lot more intense (and much longer) fights. Hearns didn't have the chin for it to be the ultimate gruelling and brutal fight. DLH/Quartey was only really good for the last round.

 

I just dont think the 3rd one is that good but i love Marquez vs Vasquez 3 and Leonard vs Duran 1 so different strokes
