I watched Chavez vs Jakubowski earlier and the commentators talked a lot about a potential fight with Terry Norris. I've also heard this mentioned in other Chavez fights too.

I understand they fought at different weights, but was a catchweight not proposed? Any other reasons why the fight never took place?

    Thanks.

Chavez wasn't a massive puncher above 140, true. Did Norris never contemplate coming down to the WW limit then? Even if Chavez would have been outmatched at that weight, I don't see him shirking a challenge.

Norris was suppose to fight Chavez at 148 or 149 pounds, but Chavez was wise to shy away from that in 1992 / '93........... Norris by TKO slaughter over Chavez........

Why did he shy away though?

Chavez wasked about the fight after he beat Haugen aswell. It was suppose to be at 147 or so.

Chavez went to fight Terrence Ali and set up the mega fight with Whitaker.

    Very smart move by him.

Norris was way too big and fast for Chavez he would have done a De La Hoya on him, without the cut being there in the first place

Fair enough, especially considering the hell Sweet Pea gave him!

Yes, that's pretty much it. Chavez fought Whitaker at 147 and we know how that turned out. Not to mention that Norris is bigger and stronger than Whitaker.

All depends on the money , Chavez brings the numbers , which also means he would have the weight in his favour , if the fight was at 147 I would edge towards Chavez , at 154 , there is no contest and Norris stops him in 1 or 2.

Man Norris chin went in the worst way Ive ever seen. Towards the end a swift wind would have knocked him down. I suppose Chavez would have had a chance post Keith Mullings?

Chavez, clearly the greater fighter, would've been murdered by Norris. That's way too much speed and power there for the size difference. Wait, where's Rooster on this one? This is going to be good...

And remember how Pea somewhat stunned Chavez with a left hook towards the end of their fight, at that very moment Chavez knew he had no business at welterweight.

Not true sir. If you watch the first McCllelan vs Jackson fight, the commentators said Terry was in the audience and was trying to pursue a rematch with Julian, but Julian lost that fight and the rematch in devastating fashion, so that's why a rematch didn't materialize.

Simon Brown parked Norris in Mexico to close 1993 on Showtime........... But Norris boxed like a master in the '94 rematch to shut-out Brown in a one-sided boxing match.... Brown looked a fool there.......

Don King wanted Chavez to go up to 147 and Norris to come down to 147. The reason why Don King wanted to make this fight is because both fighter had no marketable opponents at the time.
