Rocky Marciano Blind In Walcott Fight

in 1977 ali revealed that a well known old gangster offered him some ointment before the 74 fight with foreman to put on his gloves, neck and shoulders. this guy ( ali said "i wont say who he is but lets say he was an italian") said that this stuff would temprarily blind an opponent and "give you a break if a fight got tough". ali refused and was amazed the guy had the balls to aproach him since the same guy was linked to liston during their fight and therefore responsible for ali being blinded. he said "the guy must have got so old he forgot it was used on me, he must be crazy, howd he no i wouldnt whup him on his nose?" walcots people were heavy linked with numbers rackets. lamotta says walcots people were bad. marciano was clearly blinded in that fight and between rounds weil can be seen complaining to the ref about it, but as is often the case so long as a camp wins its often forgoten after the event. i have studdied the fight and cant notice any rubbing or smearing during inside work, wallcot in my view was geting on with the fight oblivious of stuff on his gloves. angelo dundee said that it was the gunk in rocks hair for the cut on his head that blinded him. both machen and folly complained about burning eyes in their fights with liston so there is strong evidence of this stuff in existance. marciano WAS blinded though, that is clear.

 

I didn't create the thread, and I'm not even going to bother with much of the rest of the post other than Ali wanted to quit against Liston, Dundee pushed him back out though.

Wow,it's always good to see theres tough guys who talk trash behind the computer probably got beat up alot in the schoolyard(flamengo).if this dude was around at the time walcott and marciano were fighting he wouldn't say a word of this to them.I don't care who your fighting when your in the ring and have something in your eyes your in there with another PROFESSIONAL a guy who trains for months to inflict damage even the lightest hitter can mess up someone who can't see,Walcott had a big left hook and could hit hard as well with his right.And please stop bringing up well if marciano would of fought liston crap first of all if you even knew your facts marciano retired in 1956 liston had a 15-1 record and as a matter of fact served 6 months in prison during 56 the time marciano retired and didn't even fight in 57 due to being banned for a year so he wasn't even a real contender.Marciano was a great fighter who could punch,take a punch,had great stamina,and heart and will to fight.Stop trying to bring down guys because your a loser.

 

thats true, liston wasnt rated until 58' 3years after marciano last fought. a lot of guys try to say rocky retired to avoid up and coming guys but the truth was out of the rated guys only young jack johnson and willie pastrano were the only ones who had not lost to a guy rocky kod. folly and machen had yet to register in the top ten and floyd was still lightheavyweight contender at that time, even he had lost to maxim who walcot beat who marciano kod..

i actually think that lastarza was pretty near his peak when he fought marciano. the problem was he only weighed 12-12 or so and wasn't that great anyway.

Not underrated here, he's in most top 10 P4P lists among our renown posters here.

If he's underrated, he's underrated for how much better his abilities were at the point of their first fight. A lot of people feel he's forgone and way past it. I think he was past it, too, but after re-watching the fight fairly recently I don't think he was as past it as most suggest.

 

I think he was past it, but a lot more game then most do. The Charles of the first fight was much better than the one of the second fight. Rocky really brutalized him badly after that first fight. Although, he gave Rocco another scare with the whole nose incident.

 

charles had had twice the fights rocky had.marciano started at an older age and retired sooner than the cobra.age as nothing to do with it anyway but charles was already sliding when he fought marciano.
