I think Minter would be too strong and clever for Mugabi. Remember, Minter had the discipline to stick to an effective game plan, as shown against Vito Antuofermo both times.
I am glad to see Minter's name come up here...it does not happen often!!! If Minter could avoid being cut early or badly, he would still have a tough time with this match. But I would still take a hard fought Minter decision as my choice. But he had better be careful.
Minter was scum post boxing, a drunk who caused his home town all sorts of trouble, hence the reason he gets little positive press.... But back to the point of the thread, Minter from the late 70s, as has been mentioned, who avoids too much eye damage, should fairly easily outbox Mugabi and may even stop the Beast late as John had a little bit of the dog in him. Minter WU15 (10-5)
The Calmer Minter who broke up Frank Rechie and Tonna in the Return, the Minter who Soften up the opporsition first, and used his boxing Skills would i think be favoured to Dispirit Sprinter Mugabi, and somewhere after the half way stage, i think Alan would catch the Beast with a big shot coming in, and Alan was usually a good finisher, (mugabi is no Hamsho in the Chin Dept) Alans mobility and southpaw stance would also help, so providing Alan play it Calm he can Confuse the Defuse Mugabi - Alan for me circa 8 or 9 rounds - Once Mugabi is hurt and dispirited he does not strike me as the type to stay around taking his own Medicine for too Long - Alan just has to get the prescription right, and he is capable of that.
atsch I cant believe everyone is picking Minter here Im sensing some nationalisic bias here. I remember Minter very well and recently watched his fight with Antufermo i thought he was a good boxer, above average power, Cut to easy. The Mugabi who fought Hagler Would Ice Minter within 4 rounds either by ko or stoppage on cuts. I just saw Antufermo drop him who had average power. Minter had a good jab but i dont think he could keep the beast off him for too long. Are you guys talking about the Washed up Mugabi who got blown out by Norris:huh Cause i dont see Minter beating a prime Mugabi:nono Mugabi Ko4 Minter.
this is a really good match up minter has the boxing skills to win this on pts i cant see him stopping mugabi saying that i remember duff mugabi's manager saying that mugabi had a mental problem with distance even in training while sparring he needed to be convinced he could go the distance as the rounds passed. the mugabi that fought hagler though could well of stopped minter but for the reason already stated he would have to do it before the end of the ninth in my opinion . a prime minter always had enough stamina and i feel would win a pts decision .this fight could well be won with the mental strength of minter as oppossed to the punching power of mugabi
whats forgoten about minter is that he was a banger.his chin was also solid with only sibson putting him on his arse.if he doesn't cut he'd take mugabi inside the distance.
Mugabi hit harder than Sibson.....and yey i know Sibson could punch and was a good fighter but i think A prime Mugabi is better and more dangerous.
mugabi did hit harder than sibbo.fact. when sibbo decked minter.minter had gone and didn't come back. i still think a prime minter cuts and all would beat mugabi
Mugabi was often somewhat like a flatfooted less physically impressive Tonna. underrated counterpuncher, but sitll generally relying on winging in those awkward bombs.I think he matched up better with Hagler than any Minter would have(i don't like standup fighters against Hagler), but would have been broken down by Minter after a tough fight, alan was a better all-round fighter, hard puncher and could usually take an excellent shot. The Vito knockdown was an inconsequential balance knockdown was it not?.I don't remember Minter being hurt in either fight.
