I pick Klitschko. I picture Liston pretty much looking like most Wlad's opponents. Standing there like a ****** waiting to land a big shot while eating jabs and getting stopped. Liston wasn't very good defense wise, he was just a big strong guy, yes he had a very nice jab and lots of power; but he's up against a guy with also a very nice jab and lots of power, and Wlad is a lot bigger and I think quicker too.
Liston. Guys like Lewis and Wlad have trouble with "powerjabs" from tough guys...Liston had one of the best ever.
Liston's jab would get there first, more likely than not, and he had a lot more power on his jab than Klit does on his. He had a longer reach and quicker hands to go with his better power. I think Liston would win the jabbing contest, hurting Klit to the head and body, and Klit would bust out of that jab and grab style to try to win the fight because he has heart. At that point it would be all over but the shouting because once he brings that long body and jaw in reach for combinations it's ALL Sonny, all night long.
Liston might look outsized but he was a super-heavy in dimension and power. He has more than enough to crack Wlad's jaw, and a great jab with a solid reach advantage. He had under-rated technical skills and a chin good enough to take Wlad's power. I don't think Wlad has the speed that I feel would trouble Liston in a lot of match-ups, of either hand or foot, and I don't think he'd keep Liston off him. He's not going to win easily in a boxing match given Sonny had good technical skills, a quality jab and a reach advantage, and he's not going to out-box Sonny easily if he decides to press because of his strength, power, and again range and skills. I see more ways and possibilities for Sonny to win than Wlad, so I'm going with Liston.
Sonny had a very good jab...for a brawler. But it wasn't a top ten heavyweight jab by any stretch of the imagination. An in spite his many well-documented limitations, Wlad does have a excellent jab and he can do a lot more with it that Sonny ever could. He can double and triple it up, hook of the jab...he's even won fights with that punch alone. Sonny never did. It doesn't mean that he couldn't, but he never did. As for the power jab, it's not even close. Wlad consistently hurts, cuts and demoralizes men that are 30 or 40 pound bigger than Sonny's opponents with the power of his jab. Again, he is far from a perfect fighter. But in my humble opinion, Wlad has the best heavyweight jab since Larry Holmes....far better than Sonny's.
Death by jab? Liston had the best jab in heayweight history. He also had several inches in reach over Wlad. Who's winning the jab battle?
You have to take height into reach considerations. Sonny may have a reach advantage, but with Wlad's tallness, it makes his jab have to come at an upward angle, it takes a few off the reach. A taller man also adds a few in reach when he can sort of lean in. Liston would have to combine his jab with some sort of slick footworkor bobbing/weaving...footwork and movements he does not have. Besides, I think Wlad's jab is just better than Listons. Wlad probably wins a jab battle against anyone not named Larry, Muhammad, or Lennox. Maybe a few others who I can't think of, but the list is not long.
You need to educate yourself about Sonny Liston. His jab was devastating, and he was far from a simple brawler. Foreman was his sparring partner, and said Sonny was the only man who ever turned him into a boxer, because he couldn't take Sonny's punches especially his jab. It's not a super popular opinion, but for me Sonny is the #2 HW in history, and it's his bad luck it took him so long to get a title shot and double bad luck that he was champ when the #1 HW came along to take it from him. Because nobody else was going to take that belt from him, not for a long time, and Sonny was long past his best.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm gonna go ahead and pick Wlad. I think he'd keep Liston on the end of his jab all night, bouncing right crosses off his face. Whether or not Wlad stops him is a tougher argument.
A frustration quit-job by Liston wouldn't surprise me at all after eating shots and getting clinched on the inside for the entire fight.
Liston was champ one defense, how is he ranked so high? I know h ebeat soem good contenders, he also had jaw broken by light heavy Marty Marshall in one loss, was knocked down by him in win. Liston did not have iron chin either.
