Compu Box has limited value, but it is not a good indicator of who won a fight. It can act as an aid to determining how accurate a given fighter is, but it is certainly not the end of the story.

Compu Box is also very misleading when you look at certain fighting styles and techniques. They invariably end up counting a lot of punches that only hit gloves, or a fghter rolled with effectively. In addition a guy can have a freaking jack hammer for a jab, and Compu Box will not count those punches as power shots. On the other hand a guy can be feather-fisted as hell and his over hand rights will count as "power shots."

It does have some limited value, but only if you don't take it to seriously.

How can you tell there is a bias from a fight? I don't no much about satisticts but I'm pretty sure that you can't tell if there is or is not a bias from watching a fight.

Sure you can. Just watch the commentators, listen to them, know who the powers-that-be's fighter is and you will see it. I have for years. I have seen some fair commentary but most of the time it's biased.

No you may be able to come to the conclusion that the commentators are biased. However you would have to watch at least 2 posibily 3 fights to detect a pattern. I'm not saying that compubox has or dose not have a bias. I am saying that it is something that you can not tell from watching just one fight.

The one thing HBO does have now that I think is useful is the punch concentration graphic. It divides the body into sections and is interesting for showing what punch the fighter throws the most

I agree though, Compubox is ****ing inane. Olympic scoring is worse though.

It is bollocks, especially the non existent line between clean punches and blocked ones and power and non power. I wouldnt mind so much if the graphic quietly came and went at the side of the screen but they
insist on shouting out the numbers and percentages often at the expense of hearing what is being said in the fighters corners, much more relevant than the rambling of the commentators. HBO seem to be the biggest sinners when it comes to compubox wanking.

I have no idea what is going on with olympic scoring, bodyshots are totally irrelevant, they would be better doing away with punch-by-punch scoring and using almost any other system. It would be a more accurate way of judging a fight to toss a coin.

See the bold underlined part: In my opinion any commentator who talks over the top of the fighters and trainers between rounds should be castrated, fired, and then boiled in oil IMMEDIATELY!!! in public!

I view CompuBox as a rudimentary system, but something will eventually come along better. There will alway be critics of any system, and that's good actually.

My problem with CompuBox is that it doesn't measure how strong a punch is. So a power punch is simply registered as a power punch, but we all know some power punches are more powerful than others. It also doesn't measure how effective the punch was when it landed on the person. So it's not just all about power, but how the boxer suffered from the punch. We also don't know how accurate CompuBox is.

My pet hate, the corners can sometimes add so much to a fight. Now and then you get really clear instructions that have a blatant, immediate impact on the fight. One of the best ways to really learn the sport is listening to the respected trainers and with almost every fighter they mastermind the tactics. The minutes between rounds offer a window into the sport that we dont really get with sports over here, like being a fly on the wall for the half time team talk.

Wiadimir Klitschko was losing to Tony Thompson when he stopped him, according to Compubox.

I do like seeing a fighter's workrate though, so for that I'll give Compubox credit. Counting punches thrown (not landed) should be accurate enough.

The only worth it has is in showing a fighters workrate...but even then its not going to tell the full picture.

Compubox is a tool, just like any other. Useful when used right, not so much when it isn't.

Funnier is the paroxysms some fans seem to get into at the very mention of it.

Pacquiao clearly beat Marquez last night, according to Compubox.
