I'm aware that most people are probably going to be pitching a Monzon wipe-out here. What I'm wondering is how he deals with a bigger, heavier man who "fights tall", keeps pumping the jab and relentlessly pressurizes. How much of Monzon's ability is predicated on physical advantages? Can Pavlik give him trouble?
It would be a stoppage for Monzon on the order of his ko's over fairly tall man like Tony Mundine and Gratien Tonna. If Pavlik has a little height on Monzon, it would have done him no good..Monzon stops Kelly in 10.
Neither Mundine or Tonna were taller than Monzon, Tonna is actually listed as being shorter. Pavlik is 3-4inches taller and similar advantages in reach Stylistically both Monzon and Pavlik like to control the fight with their jab and 1-2 and fight at a high pace. Pavlik has a big advantage with rangyness and even speed so from the outside Pavlik is pretty much the boss. Monzon has the better defense and timing which could neutralise Pavlik from the outside. But he would find himself having to come inside and pressure Pavlik. Pavlik is a good inside fighter himself with good power. I see the fight being really close and pick Monzon's pedgree, better skills and mentality to edge him a decision but its not a good match up for him Its interesting a great deal of this forum were proclaiming Pavlik as the new Monzon prior to his schooling from BHOPs

The "plenty" on this bandwagon is comprised of one person, SuzieQ who says that "Pavlik is very similar to Monzon". He's sort of backed by Jack who says that "like Monzon is overlooked, Pavlik won't get the appreciation he deserves" (not a direct comparison in terms of quality).
I happen to like Pavlik and think he'll prove to be a solid champ most likely, when all is said and done for him. And I think this would be a great fight for as long as it takes Monzon to murder Pavlik.
I'd like to see Pavlik do well, but he's not proving anything right now. If he only would have taken care of his hand the right way, we'd never have this kind of doubt and a lot of his planned fights wouldn't be against lesser known opponents. Overall, Monzon was too relentless. That's where I give the nod to the old champ.
