I have seen this fight dozens of times and always come to the same conclusion.Vitali couldn`t beat a lazy out of condition tubby Lennox Lewis.

Frank Bruno gave a lean quick prime Lewis a far better fight and was also winning the fight.

I have said all along that prime Bruno beats prime Klit because he hits far harder and has a better jab.

And Bruno's iron chin would have held up well against Klitchko's poor power. The Lewis-Klitchko fight was a good stoppage as Klitchko was bleeding all over the place, but my question is:why did Lennox promise a rematch and then renege?I mean he was pretty adamant about giving Klitchko a rematch.

    Great fight.
Klitschko turned out to be alot better than most first thought, he was getting the better of Lewis, just Klitschko has the sort of skin that rips easily, causing an early finish.
We'll never know how the fight would have gone had it continued, alot is made of the uppercut Lewis landed in the 6th round, but the big punch was 1min in the 6th round and Klitschko was giving as good in the other 2 mins. Lewis seemed tired to me and more likely to be stopped, than Vitali. But you never know. If for some reason the fight had of been stopped in the 2nd round, you wouldnt have thought Lewis would have still been there in the 6th. I dont buy the Lewis was out of shape story as they were both training for fights, they just didnt know it would be against each other until a week before.
Shame Lewis retired and didnt give Klitschko the rematch he craved, still as time goes on it looks a better win for the champ.

Klit would have destroyed Lewis in a re-match and Lewis knew it. He was out on his feet in the 6th,very lucky the fight was stopped as he had nothing left,he was unable to stop a one-eyed opponent. The fact he chose to retire rather than re-match says it all.
Even the commentators knew klit was a winner.Stop sucking LLs balls.

It's easy to make too much of Vitali and Lennox's performances here,as the fight was taken on short notice.

But,yeah. There should have been given a rematch for-if not Vitali-then the fans. But that's Lewis for you.

Lewis punched half his face off, it's a tko, it's not lucky, it's not a racist referee, it's not "sharp hair" or any of the other crap bizarre people come out with. Lewis won, fair and square, if anybody was out on their feet it was Klitschko. He spent half the sixth round holding on for dear life and staggered slowly back to his corner after the bell. Klitschko's corner were pulling him out anyway.
Lewis was better than the Klitschko's, get ovr it (that's my new catchphrase)

i wonder if the commentators have got anything to do with all the nonsensical "klit would have won if he hadn't lost" talk?

"vitali just needs to throw a combination and lewis will go down"

or in the last 10 seconds of the 6th when vitali is hanging on for dear life...

"its all lennox lewis can do to stay up"

It's true, the second quote more so than the first...Lewis was completely spent from the effort in the 6th round.

Foreman cracks me up. "All he has to do is land one big right hand". He landed about 20 of them through the 6 rounds and Lewis didn't budge.

    Good point.

Remember Lewis was 38 at the time, and that he was originally scheduled to fight Kirk Johnson and took the Klitschko fight at less than 2 weeks notice.

It wasn't a pretty fight, but seeing two massive guys like that just slug it out is quite an impressive sight. Klitschko performed very well, dug deep and impressed me a lot that night.

Lewis took a while to get going, and I think by the 6th round had ended the fight was really swinging in his favour. He was landing less often, but he picked his shots to perfection, really getting some big shots in there. There's an uppercut Lewis landed in the 6th round that might be the most vicious shot I've ever seen him land, how Klitschko managed to stay on his feet after that is beyond me.

    They were the days....
