If Mayweather fights Hatton, some of us, me included will not bother to buy the PPV, even if it was at a massive discount. If Pacquiao was to fight Malignaggi, the feeling would probably be the same. So they endanger their lives by seeking more dangerous opponents that would satisfy us enough to the point where we order their PPVs. Lets step into their shoes. Obviously, they are glad to have us stoke their egos and pay their checks, indirectly. They love the spotlight and the acclaim they receive during their relatively short careers. At what point do they "owe" us as fans? At what point do they say, "F*** it, I'm not putting my life in danger just to keep my fans happy, they can **** off if they don't like it?"
They can do this anytime the same way that me as a fan can stop buying their PPVs anytime I want to. Once they said that though, they should stop from proclaiming their greatness because you can only be great by fighting and beating the greats.
No. If you don't like way a particular fighter fights, turn off your station. If you don't like a certain burger joint, what do you do? You (presumably) go to a different burger joint. You don't expect them all to offer exactly the same product, despite being in the same business. You don't blame one for being what it is or blame another for what it is. You just get the product you like and move on. If you don't like how someone fights, don't be an angst-filled reject about it. Just don't watch.
not unless we share their brain damage in later life. No they owe us nothing. If you think they do then you may not be counted because you arent a fan
I'm happy with what Pacquiao has offered to his fans. He's fought the best, and has had exciting fights with knockdowns, KO's, and TKO's. I would love for the Pac-FMJ fight to happen, but if it doesn't and Pacquiao retires, boxing will go on. The fight still has a good chance of happening. I would love to see Pacquiao fight anyone good, Mosely, Berto, Collazo, Mayorga, Malignaggi, Margarito, Bradley, and etc.
So they are not beholden to us to make the matchups we like to see because in this sport, more than any other sport, they run the risk of permanent injury. We don't hate on Pacquiao or Mayweather for doing what they are doing because they are the ones who will bear the damage ultimately. So props to Mayweather for taking what appears to be the best possible low risk, high reward route if he does intend to take on Hatton. And props to Pacquiao for taking what appears to be a high risk, high reward route when there are easier opponents to take on.
Should professional swimmers be allowed to not swim because they might drown? If they don't want to fight, get the **** out of the business.
They are not beholden, but anything is negotiable, and it's up to the fighters to decide what they will accept. Of course I want to see the BEST FIGHT THE BEST. That's the way it should be. But fans telling boxers to fight one another is too simple although they do still play an important factor. Boxing is a business industry (fighter, coaching staff, promoter, t.v. networks, venues, journalists and experts, fans, and etc.), and it's the industry's responsibility to make the best fights happen for the fans. If a boxer takes a fight that you are not happy, for example a fight with high rewards and low risk, then simply don't watch it. This will force the boxer to choose a better fight next time (high reward with high risk).
Personally i dont think so. People say, well were the ones that are paying them. Well we arent paying for NOTHING. We payed to see their fights.... we are even. Fighters arent on freaking welfare where fans just throw money at them for no reason, they have dedicated their life to this sport, and are being paid when they step into a ring and face another fighter in hand to hand combat..... and they get payed for their fights. when the fighter is at the hospital after the fight, has a bruised and swollen face for a week or so afterwards and havnt seen his family much in the last couple months because he was off somewhere training, he is compensated with the money that fans have paid to watch him fight. I really dont think fighters owe fans anything.... and if the fighter doesnt perform how certain fans want or whatever, then they can voice that by now supporting him in the future. Just IMO
Sure they owe the fans but not in the sense that a lot of you guys think. If you pay $60the fighter owes it to you to come in his best shape, prepare and give his best effort. However, He doesn't owe it to you to stick his head out and let his opponent tee off on his head just because you will find it more entertaining. He doesn't owe it to you to go for a KO in the 12 and risk getting hurt when he has 11 rounds in the bank. As far as the opponents that they pick, until you buy the fight, the fighter really doesn't owe you ****, so if you don't like the opponent you just don't buy and no one owes anyone anything.
then they need to pick another sport if they are worrying about putting their life in danger. Guys like Fernando Vargas has said "you will have to take me out on a stretcher before i will quit...." now we have a problem with just getting them into the ring. they risk their lives whenever they get in the ring...its up to the powers that be who pay them money and or air the fights.....
