PFP i agree with you and i think Louis is a top 3or 4 PFP ever, but for some reason i seem to think that around 210 to 215 is the minumum weight for the huge punchers in the heavyweight division. In my opinion Louis best weight was 200 tops. I know there are lot of arguments to this but i have always had this opinion in my head.... Not gonna chage it now
I hear you, anarci. But I do think about him flat out leveling the likes of Klitschko-sized Buddy Baer and I just think he was in Tyson's range punch for punch-not Foreman, Shavers and the like though. I agree with LH though about Tyson being maybe the hardest combination puncher and maybe Louis was a notch below on that account. Tyson was machine in his youth. I'll give this one more thought. I might come around to you on it.
Not that anyone would have a better view than Steward but I do wonder if maybe there's the influence of what's most recent here. He's spent so much time with Wlad since LL retired and everything is so much fresher in his mind with him, maybe it's clouding his judgement on it a bit. Or even he might be being overly complimentary about the guy he's still going to be working with. Wlad's obviously a big, big puncher but I'm trying to picture Lennox hitting Sultan Ibragimov with this same shot, and then trying to see Sultan not get knocked down with a broken nose and showing up later in a neck brace. :yep This content is protected
Yes, but look how Wlad is delivering that punch. Hes almost throwing it like you would throw a straight lead right at distance. Contrast that to this righthand where Lewis steps in and to the side with his full weight behind it. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjxJ2LH1M-4[/ame]
I see that some of the posters are not bothering to rank these guys in order, instead arguing about other big punchers This thread is just about these punchers! I already got anoter order of the greatest punchers.
Such as who? Most of his opponents were finished by a series of punches. Besides maybe Spinks and Botha, who else was knocked out by single shots? He wasnt a champion when he fought Botha either.
Off the top of my head, the following men were KO'd by one punch: 1. Berbick 2. Tillman 3. Botha 4. Spinks 5. Tubbs 6. Ettiene 7. C. Williams All of whom were either champions, contenders or fringe contenders. Now, i'm not including tomato cans, but if you will, you can leave out the fringe contenders, leaving: 1. Berbick 2. Botha 3. Spinks 4. Tubbs 5. C. Williams If you can find an other heavyweight with more than 5 one-punch KO's over established contenders, then let me know! Until then, Tyson packs one of the hardest single-punches in history.
You are right. I had a look at his record after I posted, and had to refresh my mind how those fights ended. I think you can add Stewart and Frazier to that list too. Some of those guys were finished off with a series of shots, but realistically they would have never recovered or been able to continue from the initial one. :good
Joe louis is by default the greatest Heavyweight puncher as he is THE greatest puncher ever. Form, speed, composite punches, got to speedy little guys, big guys, iron chins....spanned two eras of Heavyweights and still stopped people when past prime, only in it for the money (because of his obvious problems) Regardless if weight, Louis had big power and the other attributes his punching entailed elevates him to the top position IMO.
Not a realist when you have Frazier ahead of Marciano. It's just yet again one of the many other double standards on this board. I wonder where Dempsey ends up. I think you should go back to the drawing board. Okay, is that a change of heart or did I misinterpret? I was replying too harshly anyway. Next reply will get at your list. Also. I think there's a difference between the biggest punchers and the best punchers. Tyson might be the top of this list, but not in terms of raw power. His speed and precision do it.
I've never seen a better puncher than Louis. He's the only heavyweight who I feel who could take out Ali. I have Ali winning a decision in a matchup but I feel Louis has what it takes to take him out if he catches him.
I remember Roach saying that Klitschko hit harder than Tyson & he worked with both circa 2004 around the same time
