Insane. The commentary team were basically implying that if Lewis was in that condition, Jones could have beaten him. STUPIDITY! Lewis would have dismantled, destroyed, dominated, devastated, Roy Jones Jr at Heavyweight. I wasn't really much of a fan in 03, can someone fill me in on how serious those whispers were? ...Did anyone actually think it would be remotely competitive?
Jones just won the WBA title 3 months before and Lewis looked past it with Vitali. Offcourse there were whispers Roy would beat him altough I agree Lewis would beat him easily.
A lot of people thought Jones would be a tough fight for Lewis back when Jones hasn't lost decisively to anyone and was #1 P4P. Believe it or not YES THEY DID, it's after he lost people started cracking jokes and claim to be professional boxing gurus that knew Jones would have lost.
yeah scar .. jones loseing to tarver caused a big anxious gasp amongest boxing fans .. so many who had road the train too long wanted off quickly .. looking at it from today you can see how many fans are jaded and flip flop based on wins and losses and not by genuinely likeing a guy
it was easy back then to get caught up in the hype, especially cause of how easily jones destroyed ruiz. now ruiz is still not on the same planet as lewis but lewis looked very tired and very lethargic against vitali. if you look back at spinks holmes, holmes looked in better shape than lewis did and spinks was not held in the same regard as jones but he still won. the size difference though in lewis-jones would have been HUGE as lewis knew how to use his physical advantages well; jones, as much as i love the man, could not have carried out a vastly different game plan as usual, which spinks did. jones knew one way to fight and that would have gotten him killed
Jones at his best wouldn't have been a pushover and would have been tough to catch. After the fact nowadays people like to act like it would have been obvious that Roy would have been sent into a coma. Revisionists.
...Has it not always been obvious what a 6'5 skilled Heavyweight would do to Roy Jones Jr? ...Come on, now. Smarten up.
yeah roy jones would of lost. but i think he coudl of outhustled lewis for a while. jamming around the ring landing a few jabs here and there before lewis starts to pick the pace up and trap him. jones is lightning quick and wouldnt of gone lightly.
I called it the whole time...had 100 on tarver in there first fight and 500 on tarver the second...jones fought NOONE for about 7 years...at 168 he was worse than JC with his resume...then he fights RUIZ and the ref breaks the clinch before them before they even clinch...Jones was a great boxer puncher but never took on the greats and when he did he was beaten...lewis would have ended his boxing career
and you could argue that people where saying similar things before jones-ruiz. he is too big has too much power for the smaller jones. ruiz is poor but there were a load of people back then saying it's just physics the bigger guy will win
yeah i know, we know, everyone knows but how would it be possible to tell when if the tarver and johnson fights didnt happen
