It's an object lesson. No one wants to talk about it, but Jones is now at the point that he's showing brain damage, getting stopped by glancing blows, and could end up dead or worse. Hopkins has no business taking this fight. I was critical of Calzaghe when he did it and will be of Bernard as well. It's enabling a guy who's blazing a trail toward tragedy. I definitely didn't intend this thread to become another war either way about karma, as I'll leave that argument to others.
So should we try to forget McClellan exists, and try to forget this could happen to others? There is no ethical basis by which you can defend Hopkins taking this bout.

if jones wants to fight why the **** would BHOP not fight him???? he will win and make money...RJJ is a big boy and BHOP doesn't exactly duck fights....since his MW reign anyway...he has a good resume with a ton of champions....RJJ is shot yes but if he fights like he can he may win this fight.....BHOP is not 30 anymore either

Because Bernard has an obligation not to contribute to an ATG's tragic decline. I've defended Larry Holmes in the past because the Ali fight was the biggest of his career. But Bernard is going to take on a Jones fight which, given the circumstances, will be about his 8th biggest? Trinidad ODLH Taylor I Taylor II Tarver Pavlik Calzaghe I wouldn't swear this fight will do better than Hopkins/Wright, even. And yet, Bernard feels completely OK with driving the nail through the Jones coffin. It's a **** move and needs to be treated as one.

McClellan's own cousin was heard in his dressing room saying to somebody 'Gerald just loves to kill things'. I don't wish what happened to him on anybody - although I feel more for his family having to look after him - but that's not pretend for one minute he was a saint just because of the unfortune events of that night.

Thing is Bernard doesn't need it for legacy or money but he needs it for himself. He needs to put the Jones defeat in his shadow.The only way he can do this is by beating Jones whichever state he is in.
This is a good thread, unfortunately the critical thinking ability of this forum is far too low to comprehend it. Jones runs the risk of making millions in his career, then losing the ability to enjoy it in retirement. He is FINISHED, and has had several brutal concussions. The man can't take a punch, and even in his sparring videos, is getting too frequently. Someone needs to pull the plug on his career.
