He needs to make up for a lost year.

You may be right - and it's certainly the most "prestigious" fight around - but I'd rather see him roll up his sleeves and start cleaning out 160.

Unless he's planning to jump up in the near future.

I really want Martinez to win. But I think Pavlik will win big, by KO and show he can also handle Williams.

According to 'sources' it was a bidding war between Pavlik and Williams for this fight and a Williams/Martinez rematch would have been at 160.

How better to do that than 3 or 4 fights against guys in the top ten? Too much waiting around, reliance on big fights which require long promotions and set dates. He may only fight twice this year at this rate, and one of them's not even a Middleweight. That's not a recipe for a respectable title reign.

Most of this post is correct. The point about foot-work is wrong, though. Margarito reaches constantly. He's regularly out of position. It's really horrible to watch at times, and it's one of the reasons Mosley made him look so amateur. Pavlik has orthodox footwork, but at least it ensures that he never throws wild shots. He can always get power because his feet are set correctly. That can be a disadvantage as well, though.

    On the other hand:

    Pavlik has more power.
Pavlik has more physical strength. (Mosley was stronger at 147 than Margarito; there ain't no Middleweights that are stronger than KP.)
Pavlik has better tools. (Less punch variety as you say, but what he does throw is generally more accurate and powerful. Much better jab and straight right, for instance.)

Plus, Margarito may well have been ruined by Mosley and the lay-off.

Oh yeah, and you better not be using the old "Margo is better than Pavlik and Williams beat Margo, so he'd beat Pavlik" line. That would be cringeworthy.

    Cringeworthily transitive.

I don't think it would do his pocket any good nor his rep any good to fight most of the guys at MW. Some might prove stiff competition and other might end up doing things later, but as I see it. It'll end up being a big fish, small pond type thing. The kind of thing that gets Calzaghe type criticism.

    Just for you to know!

I wanted to say the same but was never in the mood to discuss a Margo/Pavlik comparison!

Great fight. I can't wait to see Kelly back in action against a talented opponent. I will give my analysis of this fight as it gets closer.

The point was money. Williams/Martinez rematch was going to be at 160 which makes you wonder. "They" said Paul was going back to 147 yet was trying to make the rematch at 160?
