I've been looking a lot at the Heavyweight champs recently but I was just wondering who the best people were that never got a title?

Like Shavers, where would guys like him rank? Then there's the black guys like Wills and Langford who weren't given the chance.

    Who are the top contenders?

    Cheers.

Peter Jackson, Sam McVey, Joe Jeanette, Sam Langford, Harry Wills all due the colour bar.

Just boxrec'd Peter Jackson because I knew he'd fought Jeffries and was wondering who else he'd fought and came across the string no contests. What's going on there?

No decision bouts. Bouts with a rendered points decision were at the time illegal in many parts of the US. No decision bouts called for a winner to be named only in the event of a KO.

Harry Greb deserves a mention in spite of his never weighing in at HW. I'd say he was better than McVey and possibly Jeanette.

Jackson actually goes down in history as the first black World Heavyweight Champion, when he won The Police Gazette title

I don't think these three should be there. Or you could include guys like Risko and Neusel, Savon and so on.

What, so they were fighting 4 round fights where if there was no KO there was no winner? Seems pretty extreme.

David Tua has never even held an alphabet strap.

Considering he fought in an era when people like Bruce Seldon,Frans Botha,Hasim Rahman,Oleg Maskaev and John Ruiz have been called "champ" at one point or other and a guy like Tua hasn't is quite amazing when you think about it.

Or it speaks volumes about how good Tua actually is.

I watched Ali-Quarry last night, Ali made him look like a chump with his jab. Crazy speed on that thing.

I find it odd that Tua has never won a strap. Ruiz was smashed in 19 seconds by Tua, and has won an alphabet title a few times.
