The Manfredo fight was a fight made on purpose to gain American interest, as Calzaghe was still only really known in America for beating Lacy (yes cherry picked) and it worked with Manfredo having been a runner up on the contender and starting to fight at SMW, but also at the time of this fight Manfredo was rated in The Ring top 10 SMWs. Weak division or not, is not Calzaghes fault. But this does not make a cherry picker, when you have a fighter who at some point in his career wins all the belts in his division and then steps up a division to become the #1 rated LHW he cant have cherry picked his way all the way there, and in taking the Lacy fight, a fight he was not favoured to win cant make him that big a cherry picker

Joes one of those fighters where opinions are split down the
middle as to how good he was, half say he was better than
good - whilst the other half say he beat up on old man Jones
and pretty much lost to old man Hopkins, whilst his win
against Kessler he since been de-valued somewhat.
Considering those were his 3 biggest scalps, I can see why
a lot of ppl think JC was overrated.

you've just saved me the time of typing that bailey.

this bull**** fight was put together purely for the ignorant american market who knew **** all about a great fighter who was fighting outside of the american market. some things never change.

He was good, very good, well above average-there's not really any argument against that but the fact remains his record is **** poor because he didn't take on any credible opposition.

Do you not consider Hopkins middleweight title reign as against weak opposition??:huh

for the most part yes. but even though his opponents were better than caalzaghe's. it's not just title defenses. hopkins fought better opposition before and after his midleweight reign compared to calzaghe.

i know what you mean. but as you saw in his fight with hopkins, aside from the low blow, he never hurt hopkins. hopkins did the damage and won the actual FIGHT as evidenced by calzaghe's face and a comparison of highlights after the match, but calzaghe simply threw enough punches to win rounds. he won the match without actually winning the fight. you out threw a 43 year old. congratulations.

And how many of that better opposition did he lose to??

Hopkins big success was in round 1 and he didn`t have the confidence or belief to follow it it up. He used a negative survival first strategy throughout the bout from round 2 and resorted to feigning low blows to try and get a rest when he was gassed.

it was never survival first because he was never in danger. in round 7, his 3 punches at the end out did anything calzaghe did the whole fight. in round 3, he lights calzaghe up twice with REAL combinations. he lights calzaghe up with his back against the ropes in round 4. he walks in and throws a right behind the jab that hits calzaghe for the first 5 rounds everytime he throws it. he didn't fight a survival first match. he fought a match like he was 43 years old and had to conserve energy. father time did more against hopkins that night than calzaghe did.
