I remember hype about Manfredo's marketability as a face, but I sure hope there was none proclaiming him as a world-beater. I believe he was being proclaimed more along the lines of John Duddy than, say... Jeff Lacy. After all, the betting odds were huuuuuge against him with Calzaghe; it was something like thirty to one! It was definitely meant to garner American interest, but I doubt even Manfredo's mother hung their hopes and dreams on a Rhode Island domination of, today, Wales... tomorrow, the world.
Joe gets more than his fair share of hate on ESB. I also think his very loyal fans exaggerate his accomplishments to suit their arguments. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. He was a terrific fighter, who for whatever reason, went the vast majority of his career without fighting top, prime competition. He beat everyone he should have beaten and surprised the boxing establishment by dominating an (at the time) up and coming Jeff Lacy. Unfortunately Lacy never did anything of substance and is now perceived an all time hype job.( in large part to JC's beat down of him.) He beat Kessler (his top win IMO), Hopkins, who at age 42 was far beyond his prime. That's not to say he wasn't a challenge, but at his age, the challenge was dulled substantially and can not rank as if he beat Hopkins, top 50 ATG. The win over Roy Jones should not register among JC's top 5 wins. Part of the reason JC gets dicredited on ESB is the perceived protection of his "o". Some of that response can also be as a result that his most ardent fans use that "o" as ammo for arguments in his favor. If he had a loss to a top notch fighter in his prime, and was tough in that loss, I betcha it would have quelled alot of the venom spewed his way. It would deflate the argument that he was a cherrypicker/ avoider, etc. By all accounts, JC had tried to get fights against top guys in his earlier years, but didnt. When it all comes down to it, you fight who you fight. There are a lot of reasons why fights that could be made end up not being made. Some may be their fault, some the other guy's, and some nobody's fault, or just circumstantial. But, your record reflects who you actually fought and when you fought them. So coulda, woulda, shoulda..... fought guys doesn't mean much. Guys will be judged by the guys on their resume, and appropriately so.
More fiction. In 2002, Calzaghe agreed to fight Hopkins IN THE US. Bernard's team demanded Three Million. Calzaghe's team agreed. Next day, Bernared reneged and demanded SIX Million, double what had been agreed to, thhereby scuttling the fight. Try and get your facts straight.
Name me one in their prime p4p fighter that mayweather has faced. I can tell you you how many he has ducked. The answer is more than he has faced. which is 0. So STFU
Bull**** dumb****. once again you're talking out of your ass. Warren asked hopkins people in a conference with jay larkin ( prez of showtime in 2002 ) what it would take to get nard in the ring with joe. Nard's peeps said 3 million and the fight is in the states, and warren said "done" 3 days later hops demands 6 mil. There is a transcript on this to read. I'll look it up and try to link it. Larkin verifeid this. Yes, hops ducked calz in '02. FACT!!
Good fighter with a padded record who stayed in a less than competitive division and chose to make his only fights against name fighters once they had aged. Doesn't deserve most of the respect he gets. Or to be in the hall of fame.
I think Calzaghe does not get proper credit for the BHop & RJJ wins. I don't always agree with Harold Ledderman (sp?) but he had it right when he said that he did not see it as a close fight. Name me one other fight outside of RJJ where BHop seemed more frustrated than his opponent. Ugly fight that it was, body language says a lot and Calzaghe was in control for the last 2/3 of the fight. Sorry, but cover up, wait, punch, & hold doesn't win rounds. If they fought earlier BHop would have opened up more and gotten hit more because Calzaghe is quicker. Re RJJ: while showing a vulnerability to be knocked out, name me anyone else who has beat RJJ in the fashion that Calzaghe did. Old or not, who else could have done that to RJJ? Finally, what is with the disrespect for the HOF in some posts? In all sports, it is a small percentage that moves on to the next level. When one strings that out to a career on the professional level that justifies the HOF, can't we show respect?
I agree with that.I used to hate him but have come around a bit.He was a good fighter, not great but very good.
im glad you said it so i dont have to mate it really pisses me off how hes made out to be something great hes plain average. not bad but not brilliant. im genuinely surprised hes made out to be the best when even a british fighter in his own generation is better you know at least hatton dared to be great.
