Turpin and Sands were two of the best fighters during a golden era for the middleweight division and both fought common opponents despite never meeting personally. Sands beat Bobo Olsen twice,Pete Mead and Doug Miller and lost to Tommy Yarosz and was stopped by Yolande Pompey. Turpin beat Tommy Yarosz,Pete Mead and Doug Miller and lost to Bobo Olsen and was stopped by Yolande Pompey as well. Of course Turpin beat Sugar Ray Robinson for the world title which is an enormous achievment and also stopped Don Cockell who'd later lose a heavyweight title fight to Rocky Marciano. Sands also had some notable wins over Robert Villemain,Henry Brimm and famously iced Randy's brother Dick Turpin inside a round but never got a title shot. So who do you think wins this evenly matched battle of talented but ulimately tragic middleweights?
i have to hold my hands up and say my hero, randy would've been beaten by mr sands. i'm glad you mentioned randy's win over mead, turpin hit mead so hard he broke his ribs and he fainted.1951 was randy's best year ,winning british, empire, european and on july 10th,the world title.it was mostly down hill from then on. sands on points
This thread will help Im sure. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=192954&highlight=sands
**** I thought this was a thought provoking, obscure matchup.Bloody Classic forum trumps me again. Thanks anyway.
State facts on Dave Sands a little more definatively. He was not beaten at M/W since 1947 to start with. Losing on points in his first England appearance to Yarosz was due to an infection in his right arm. You failed to mention that Sands never lost to a M/W after 1947. The loss to Yarosz, Sands' first England appearance, was due to an arm infection which plaqued his own trianing. The loss to Pompey was due to a cut eye. Take a more thorough look through his story.. boxrec does not suffice. Turpin was asked if he'd like to fight Sands. He suggested he'd rather face SRR again. Beating Olsen in both Australia and Chicago.. Smashing Villemain who'd never been dropped to that point (who went on to embarrass world champ, Cement head LaMotta immediately after), belting Brimm twice in Oz and the USA.... Sands is one to deserve far more than average comparatives...
Sands was one of Australia's best ever fighters no worries but I was only giving a brief overview of his and Turpin's careers for the purpose of making comparisons between the two against common opponents. It's nothing to get snooty about. Also I think you're being a little disingenuous with your excuses for a couple of Dave's losses.Tommy Yarosz was an ultra-smart cutie who to accounts I've read simply befuddled a not switched on Sands (he was homesick apparently). As for the arm injury, well plenty of boxers blame losses on them don't they? And Sands didn't just lose on a cut eye against Pompey. He was cut in the sixth and was getting pummelled on the ropes in the seventh when the referee stopped it.He was in front at the time but he was legitimately stopped whereas you make it sound like he was Klitschko against Lewis and only lost because of a fluke cut. That said Pompey was a naturally bigger man so there's no shame in that. As for Turpin prefering to face Robinson again, that's a no brainer.A Sugar Ray fight would bring in huge dollars as opposed to fighting an equally as dangerous, comparatively unknown kid from Australia for peanuts. You can't hold that against Randy as thats what being a pro's all about. I'm not putting Sands down as I reckon he would also have beaten Randy Turpin and was a real threat to Robinson if he'd gotten a shot as well but he wasn't perfect either.
good post mate:goodlittle is known about sands, probably in the states as well as the uk.i didn't know anything about his loss to pompey and i thought sands had never been stopped. i still think sands would have beaten turpin but i wouldn't read too much into randy's loss to pompey.turpin was finished at that time as a fighter but even so, had the power to hurt pompey, knocking him into the ropes and disentangling him before being ko'd himself. after brother dick was ko'd by sands he was asked by a reporter if he thought his younger brother could beat sands.dick said yes.the reporter said "you would say that, you're biased" as reporters questions go i've always thought that was amongst the dopiest
