Both were past their respective primes.

Calzaghe's wins over Hopkins and RJJ are much like Lennox Lewis's over Tyson and Holyfield.

I guess that is the way they roll in the UK, only fight the yanks when they are old and way past their prime.

Then get your fanboys to call you an ATG.

If Calzaghe comes out and wins the super 6 tournament he would have my praise until then he would just be a good fighter with a big question mark on his legacy !!! Beating two 40yr old legend which one took you to a split decisions is not gonna cut it.

:patsch So was Calzaghe or shall we just ignore that....

Joe's resume is fine - Joe was a great fighter and one of the best of his generation. Joe >>> Hopkins, Pavlik, JT and a host of other popular American fighters in and around the SMW divison but cause he is European and did not play up to the American fight scene earlier in his career some people are always gonna question him.

No one proclaims Manfredo as anything or expected him to win. You have cut out alot of the quote on page 3, he was used to gain American interest, as even though Calzaghe had been a champ for alot of years beating American opposition in Sheika, Brewer, Lacy and Mitchell, all clearly, he still wasnt known.

Tbh what annoys me isnt how people hate calzaghe , its the double standards. We have people like Ward who fouls a lot who is already being claimed as better than calzaghe, yet Froch fouls a lot and is a cheat, we have dirrel who doesnt beat up his oponents but uses what people keep calling IQ and super boxing skills to win, yet when calzaghe does it its faking a win. We havce hopkins who also has a pretty weak resume AND ducked calzaghe, yet he is for sure p4p one of the best ever. If there wasnt such blatant double standards regarding american fighters it would be much better. An example is earlier in the thread someone said its ajoke to have expected RJJ or Hopkins to have come to UK to fight calzaghe, yet calzaghe is hated on for not going america?

    This is all tru.

I also think the hate is due to ignorance. Calzaghe had an un-attractive yet highly effective style. Calzaghe was supposed to lose to Hopkins (that pissed people off). Calzaghe faced the best available & tried to fight Hopkins earlier.

Yep i think you hit upon a key thing about how unatactive his style looked.

Is it true that Calzaghe was getting 6 million and Hopkins was getting 3?

EDIT: This BBC article from the time seems to suggest that the fight would be in Cardiff.

Rather than make a list (Julian Jackson, Glencoffe Johnson, Tarver, McClellan, Hopkins, Dawson, Adamek, Jones Jr, etc..... Let's just leave it at almost every top world class prime fighter for the vast majority of his career. Unless you think they were inferior to the Manfredos, Thornberrys and Sobots of the world.
For 10+ years, 20 or so defenses, didn't the guy just basically sit and wait(with the exception of Ottke, which would not have added all that much to his resume) to see who would come strolling into Wales to fight?

No fighter can fight everyone out there. But the guys top challenges in his career were Lacy, Kessler, Bika, and old Hopkins and a finished Jones. Those are not the type of challenges upon which to build a very strong legacy, it's what you do to cement a legacy, but the main body just isn't there. To use the argument that the best guys out there happened to be the guys he fought, and his resume of opponents satisfies you, well, then I guess you don't expect much out of the guys you root for.

I don't think it was entirely JC's fault that he didn't fight top guys in their prime.......but it's also not entirely their fault either. Plenty of reasons fights don't happen, the blame probably lies somewhere in the middle.

In the end, you fought who you fought and that is how you are measured.

    Julian jackson was a MW,
By the time Glen johnson was credible Calzaghe was fighting Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins
Tarver - was LHW & when JC eventually moved up to there he fought a better guy
McClellen retired before Joe won a belt
Dawson - Same as Tarver plus end of JC's career needed payday
    Adamek - LHW/CW/HW
RJJ left SMW before JC even won a belt
