I think a bit too much is made of the scorecards, score one round the other way and it's even. It's not like the fight was stopped in the 12th and Vitali was up 9-2. It was a very competitive fight so yes, anyone talking about domination or (god forbid) "beat down" on either hand is talking shite.
Considering that Holyfield and Tyson were both completely past it when Lennox beat them, this is probably his best win. POST SCRIPT: Don't get me wrong- Lennox had already secured his legacy.
Was Lewis past his best or not? If you accept that he was past his best (as most people do) against Klitschko then surely he was past his best against Tyson? As for the stoppage, Lewis took some big shots himself. He could also have ended up losing on cuts- it just happens that it was Lewis who got it on the night. Don't get me wrong- prime for prime I think Lewis finds a way to win, but if those cuts hadn't happened it could have gone either way that night. I'd lean slightly in Vitali's favour though
why talk so much **** after a fight then walk away from a rematch, which would of sold big!!!! SCARED
Considering what Vitali has accomplished prior and post, it is one of Lewis's greatest victories in my opinion.
Funny, I voted for "okay" but for different reasons. Clearly Vitali is one of, if not the best, name on Lennox's resumé but it's how he won that lowers the rating. He didn't win by vicious KO, he won on cuts. Cuts that were caused by legit punches but he was losing the fight plain & simple.
I agree with the highlighted portion 100% Imagine what people would've said if Vitali was behind in the scorecards but won the fight on cuts.
Im going to sum up what i made of the fight: Ageing Lewis (38) out of shape and pretty much unmotivated stopped a prime Hungry motivated Vitali on cuts, Judges had the fight at 4-2 Vitali at time of stoppage, was a very close fight and wouldnt be surprised at 3-3 (how i had it) both very tired but Lewis did enough to force the referee to intervine, It would have been a risk to Vitali's health/eyesight for the ref to let that continue, after the fight even though Lewis wouldnt admit he obviously knew he was on the slide and a re-mach would almost gift Vitali a win, why risk legacy when he already did enoug the first time? A prime Lewis would have beaten prime Vitali, hell an ageing Lewis did
I a agree. Personally i had the fight a draw. Lewis had cut Vitali badly with his fist!!! in round 3 and seriouesly hurt Vitlai in round 6 with his honey punch the uppercut. The fight was stopped at the right time. Vitali could loose his eye. Lewis won by TKO round 6.
