How or why did 'Tyson' snap to embarrass himself in 1997?

Mike was heavily medicated, and they had to drop him off his meds before every fight. That poor ****ing guy probably didn't know whether he was coming or going half the time with all the **** going on in his life.

I agree, if he was living a normal life with normal pressures he probably would have been fine with daily zoloft, but his life was far from normal, and that **** can turn a guy who's a bit of a head case into a major freak. And it did.

The first time I saw Tyson really start losing it in the ring, was his second fight against Ruddock in 1991.He got a couple(?) of points deducted by Mills Lane for repeatedly hitting below the belt.

Watching that bout, you sense that Tyson was in decline and that at the time Holyfield would have been the favourite had a fight taken place.

I think the penny dropped for Tyson in that 2nd fight with Holyfield that his days as a "great heavyweight" were over and he became filled with self loathing and hatred for the man causing that to happen.

So he wasn't concerned about disgracing himself and just wanted to express his hatred for Holyfield.

Atlas is on record as saying that Tyson sexually harassed Atlas' step-daughter(I think Tyson stuck his hand down her pants and had a good feel around), so Atlas went after Tyson, put a gun to Tyson's head and told Tyson that if he ever touched a member of his family again, Atlas would kill him.

Then to hammer the point home, Atlas shot the gun into the air or into the ground(I can't remember which now).

I assume Tyson's on his medication here.He seems so placid.

It was indeed confirmed that they had Tyson doped up to the eyeballs for that interview.

He's always claimed it was headbutts.. and if you have the fight on tape, as I do, you'll also notice that he already looked a little crazy stepping into the ring for the rematch in the firstt place. He didn't have quite that same crazy-eyed look before their 1st fight.

So you add the headbutts to the fact that he was already starting to get frustrated and losing the fight, and you get a classic Tyson erruption.

P.S. Not a lot of people notice this, but in the 2nd round of their rematch Tyson was already trying to break Holyfield's arm the same way he did to Botha. If you have a chance to look at the fight check it out. Tyson gets Evander in an arm lock along the ropes and then Holyfeld flings him around and takes a swing at Tyson.

True but one of the Headbutts ( second fight I think ) is so hard it actually buckles Mikes legs a little bit.

It was pre-meditated from Tyson as well.

He actually got called back by his corner at the start of the 3rd, because he'd deliberately not put his mouth piece in.

Them putting it in still didn't stop him.

The 3rd round was a great round for Tyson too, he'd started landing punches.

In my book, Tyson was still a "Contained Moron" in 1991 against Ruddock in both fights........ His skills were slipping for sure, but he hadn't raped anyone or promised to eat somebody's kids for lunch at that juncture...... Tyson went too far in Indiana........

I saw the scene / incident in the '95 HBO "Tyson" film...... I think the movie was fairly accurate on that account......... Michael Jai White was great in the lead role........ Props to George C. Scott, too.......

Tyson was 222 for the fight of 1996 and 218 pounds for the rematch of 1997...... You can see Tyson is more ripped in # 2, but his excercise program failed to hone his fading skills....... Skillwise, Tyson was the same.......... Faded / Slipped........... Holy got off real good early on nailing Tyson in fight # 2....... Evander Holy was never a defensive wizard in the ring, but Tyson sure as hell had problems landing combos' on Holy in both fights......

It was a combination of a few things. The first being that short uppercut in the first round that shook Tyson. The frustration started building at that point. Tyson fought back hard and was winning the third. At that point Holy started using his head more and even resorted to a low blow.. Tyson bit Holyfield because the fight was very competitive and Tyson felt Holyfield had a big advantage after being cut over both eyes unfairly.
At the time it was incomprehensible why someone would bite someones ear like that, but after seeing Holyfield use his head as a weapon in future fights, it took some of the craziness off of Tyson's retaliation.
Tyson no longer had the technical savvy to use his elbows like he did in his youth, so he resorted to something that he often did in training when he was frustrated which was chewing on his glove. Instead he chewed on Holyfields ear.
