There's a lot to do about the chins of various British boxers and it comes up again with the Khan - Maidana bout coming up, the way Froch looks to be able to block punches with it and coming out on top and the question if Haye stands a chance against the Klitschko brothers, who are both on different ends of the scale chinwise. Here a little list with my 'chin ratings' Lennox Lewis - suspect, lost on KO to 2 guys who where nowhere near his class but avenged them both. Herbie Hide - suspect, knock him out or get knocked out. Has no defence against real big and powerfull HW's, turned to the cruiserweight division wise move I think. Ricky Hatton - average, got KO'd by Pac in 2 and by Floyd in 10... but hey... #1 and 2 boxers out there. Amir Khan - suspect, at least... Got KO'd by Prescott, and KD half a dozen times in just 23 pro fights, has to develop a great defence to cover that up. Carl Froch - Great, a geat chin, punchingpower and determination can get you far... maybe all the way. Plus you normally get spectaculair fights, but watch out or you end up like Ali. David Haye - suspect, I still have to put this guy in the suspect area and his next bout will problably not tell us anything too... Went out on cruiser and down a few times and hasn't faced real HW punchers yet. Future will tell. How do you rate those guys? And feel free to add more (championship level) boxers on the list.
I think you have it pretty much spot on, Lewis' chin was a little stronger than most think there's a couple youtube videos that highlight him taking some big shots and let's be fair crude or not if an 18 stone man bangs you as hard as he can on the chin. Good night. I also think Ricky Hattons chin diminished more than anything, you can only walk through so many punches until it goes is how I feel it went with Hatton, I don't much count the Pacquiao knock out I don't see many getting up from that it was like he got hit with a shot gun.
Lewis had a good chin. The McCall stoppage was questionable, plenty of guys have been allowed to continue in a worse state, see Golota vs Lewis and Bowe vs Golota. Probably has something to do with McCall being a King fighter and Jose Sulaiman sitting at ringside. Rahman was just one of those things I guess, if you disrespect your opponent you can get nailed. He got what he deserved really. Eubank had the best chin of any British fighter I can think of, ahead of Clinton Woods who was possibly equally granite chinned but didn't face punchers of the calibre of Benn, Watson, Collins and Thompson. Calzaghe had a good chin, Hatton slightly less so. It's one area where British boxers are generally inferior to American fighters.
I bet I can think of a load of American boxres with **** chins, not very good chins and guys who have been stopped by moving up in weight. I do not think the country of origin has anything to do with it or colour or race.
Must be the training they do, neck exercises and stuff. If you name the ten best chinned fighters from the UK (might as well include Ireland as well) - and the USA, I bet the guys at the lower end of their list are better chinned than ours. British/Irish guys with good chins.... Eubank Collins Woods Calzaghe Bruno (I know) Lewis Froch Jason Booth Eastman Americans.... DLH Hopkins Mosley Mayweather Hagler Leonard Holyfield Tyson Bowe Those are just quick lists, you could add a fair few to each of those I guess.
Yeah, I've seen Hearns do that with a medicine ball with some belt around his neck and head, didn't help him too much though :huh
Froch while having a good chin is still vastly overrated. He got put down by Taylor who aint exactly Mike Tyson when it comes to putting people on the canvas.
Calzaghe had a good chin. Clinton Woods was only stopped once and that was against Jones so no shame there. Lewis was certainly suspect.
100% agreed. Great chin. The Jones fight was a stoppage because it was one sided, his chin stood up. And did you see the bombs he took from Cloud?
What was Johnny Nelson's chin like? 12 losses, only 1 by KO..... but the opposition is less than stellar it must be said..... not a great deal of big hitters other than probably Ezra Sellars.
Decent enough I think... Sellars dropped him, took a couple off Thompson... it was more a case of him been so hard to catch.
