Marciano also used to work the Heavy Bag over like a goddamn demon. That contributed to his conditioning far more than the running did
You gotta mix it up: Roadwork with Sparring!!! One always complements the other!!! The harder, the faster and most intense is the better!!! And BOTH CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT!!!
Roadwork is used by most boxers simply to improve conditioning while sparring IMO is used to improve skills. As stated by previous posters roadwork strengthen the heart, expands the lungs, improves circulation, and makes the body a well-oiled machine. Next to swimming, nothing beats roadwork in terms of overall benefits it gives to the body in terms of conditioning.
I'll agree to an extent in that the only way to get better at boxing is to actually box. Guys who spar a lot are generally in better condition(as far as boxing is concerned) because they learn to relax in the ring and are used to fighting hard when they have to. The big problem with this theory is some people who claim running is overrated are lazy in general and use it as an out to get out of working hard. Running is probably overrated and/or done wrong for boxing, but if done properly it definitely has it's place especially on an elite level
This may be going off topic a little, but I think this is a good idea (I presume when you say straight, you mean in rounds). Also, I'd do one round with the weights on, the next with them off and then when you come to do your third round (with weights), try to do it at the same speed you did your second (without weights) and when you come to your fourth round (without weights) try to do it quicker than the third (with weights) and so on.
Thats because he needs to do : --- scale down mileage before the fight and rest --- and relax more in battle. Now that mileage done weeks before will pay dividends. Should be able to go an intence 20 rounds.
I dont think this MexicanJew guy has ever had to get in shape before. Hes a youngster. Look like i said before runnin well get your red blood cells built up more than gym conditioning And it will open up your Strengthen your lungs. Its a different work out then sparring and mit work way different. Just like in sparring some guys are relaxed and use less energy. When guys do road work its the same thing. But both are needed and neither is overrated
its all about being sports specific. sparring & skillwork is the most important part of a boxer's training. All the "scientific" strength and conditoning routines in the world mean nothing if a fighter doesn't spar regularly or have a knowledgeable BOXING trainer to tweak his technique(which does wonders for your speed, power, and agility in itself), teach him to deal with different types of fighters, etc.
Running especially on hard surfaces with poor footwear will ruin your knees, ankles, feet and probably your hips. The pounding over miles and miles does damage over time. The best training for a boxer would be to do similar movements to what they do in the ring, perhaps even swim instead. Walking fast up a steep incline perhaps carrying additional weight is just as good if not better than jogging at the same pace.
Where did you get your very incorrect information? Floyd M. puts in 6 to eight miles. Paul Williams puts in 5 daily. Calzaghe ran 6 daily. All the old school greats with excellent stamina - Armstrong, Monzon, Marciano, Frazier, Ali, Robinson, Greb, Hagler, etc. put in loads of roadwork. Clowns that gas like Haye, don't do as much roadwork.
Thats BS, nobody runs 10+ miles daily. That's like running a marathon daily, it's not necessary to run that much just to maintain weight. You don't even have to run more than 5 miles a week to lose weight.
Where do you get your numbers? 5 miles daily I can believe, but it's not necessary to run 5 miles daily unless you are trying to make weight. Paul Williams I can believe runs 5 miles daily because look at his body type? Floyd and Calzaghe? 5 miles daily? where did you get your numbers?
