TWO FIGHTS: Michael Dokes vs. "Weaver & Coetzee"

I remember the Weaver v Coetzee fight, it is one of my all time favourites.

Coetzee hit weaver with a huge punch on the top of the head and Weaver almost went through the canvas! Weaver though was tough as hell and try as he might Coetzee couldn't finish him.

An exhausted Coetzee was stopped shortly after as I recall. It was a helluva fight!

 

It was Evangelista's best win by a mile and at the time it wasn't really a massive surprise. Snipes was good but Evangelista wasn't as bad as some people think.

Snipes always blew hot and cold in his career but he was always an enertainer.

 

I am always wary of fighters who are supported by fans with great excuses ... such is the case with Coetzee ...I think you guys are really overating Coetzee here ... HIs victory over Spinks was beating a wide open amateur. He lost to Tate because Tate was better. Coetzee was the white guy fighting at home in aparthied South Africa. Tate was the black man fighting hin in his own backyard. If anyone had excuses it would be Tate. He then got crushed by Weaver who was a game, hard hitting fighter but no world beater when facing "huge" punchers. IT was not his fault that Dokes went druggie but Dokes did have a huge drug problem that was at it's peak when he fought Coetzee. Watch the film and look at the man. He was messed up. He was then destroyed by Page.

MY point is Coetzee was a solid contender. He looked good against Snipes. He looked good against Thomas. I look at him like I look at Ingo, a one trick pony with so-so skills and chin.

 

What is it with all the ancient threads being dug up from the depths?

For me it's not the vhs tapes I have that are bad (I still tape the fights all the time), It is the sorryass vcrs that they have nowadays that can quickly eat up these tapes and take history right out of the house. My first vcr lasted 12 years and since then I've owned about 20 of them and none last more than a year or two before they started ****in' up and eating tapes. I tape a lot but comeon.:viking

 

I worried about that too, so I bought 4 of them for about 50 bucks a piece 3 years ago and still have two new ones put up. A true fan will always be ready. I got to tell you though, they make it really hard to be a boxing fan nowadays. They seem to do NOTHING to make the sport enjoyable for the true fans. High prices, payperview, not many boxing mags, etc.:rasta

 

Dokes struggled mightily against a motivated Weaver, and I gave the nod the Weaver, myself. I thought Dokes seemed a bit off for that fight. Against Coetzee, it seemed to me that Dokes didn't want to be there. I think he was abusing drugs by this time.
