But again anarci...The reasons why he didnt fight those guys are irrelevant, the fact is he didnt fight them.

So how can he be a lock for top30 alltime when he didnt undisputedly prove he was the best around at the time..Then wouldnt those others guys mentioned be ranked about the same?...Surely you see the flaws in that logic, at least give me that.

Chiquita and Carbajal are not close to top 30 i would have them in my top 100 though.
Ive explained my reasons why Lopez is so high on my list during countless debates . In a HTH matchup id put Lopez even higher but i do take account other fighters superior resumes.

I do realise that mate and Im not trying to get you to go through that again...but as dominant as he was I personally cant be so sure that Lopez would have been able to handle the bigger, stronger guys who could infight and still possessed elite skills..there just wasnt really any precedent.

He beats just about everyone up to fly...and a lot of flys too..but the very best around there I cant be sure because at least they proved themselves against better opposition.

But bringing your comment in from the other thread about Conteh...how could someone who puts so much stock in ability on film not rate him very highly? He was like a light heavy Napoles.

I think Calzaghe is massively underrated but so is Lopez & I cant see by his brilliant technique in this one... he is a truly top tier technician, I give him the edge.

If he had better opponents to show us what most of us are sure he had then he might very well have surpassed Chavez as Mexico`s best ever.

Calzaghe is the best Brit in the last 20 or so yrs no doubt but I give the edge to Ricardo Lopez.

I got to say, I was reluctant to Calzage early on in his career but I seen him get up from a KD and win a few times but I like the way he got back into the fight. I started paying attention when he beat the experienced Chris Eubank but then went on to build an impressive career. He did not demand the attention of the Amercan fighter until his performance against a very favored Lacy (not too many thought Joe was going to win) and he dominated and ruined Lacy.

He then went on to beat Kessler but the thing that impressed me was the way he changed strategy. He went on to beat Hopkins and even had Bernard faking a foul to rest from Joe's pace. He finsihed with a clear win against Jones and he clearly backed off(not wanting to stop Roy) What can you say all the guy did was win. I think his record could have had more exciting fights early on but he beat everyone in front of him and finished well.

Barely beating an extremely old middleweight doesn't save a super-middleweight career squandered by hiding in wales with a paper title.

Calzaghe has the better resume in terms of quality, but not by that much. Lopez looked better in general, regardless of who he fought for the most part, and I maintain that straw weight wasn't quite as desolate as people make it out to be. Not great by any means, but not the very worst division that ever existed.

Both crack my Top 100. Neither crack my Top 50 at this point, but I think Lopez is just a bit higher than Joe C at this time.

I actually tend to think it is. The only other you can even make an argument for in that position is Cruiserweight.

Especially after what Alvarez was able to do, and he was probably the strongest most physical guy Lopez ever faced, and without elite skills.
You simply cant rank a guy based on speculation.

    Maybe...

But there were still serviceable fighters that Lopez fought and defeated, such as Villamor, Guardia, Sanchez, Alvarez, Melchor, Lee, Lin, Sar Jatourong and Ohashi...plus Poltelo and Sor Vorapin at jr. flyweight. Really, the only viable fighter that he didn't face at strawweight was Chana Porpaoin, and he defeated his conqueror in Alvarez. All I'm saying was that there were enough good fighters that Lopez fought and defeated to warrant a slightly higher placement than Calzaghe.

:good :goodVery true thats what ive been trying to tell these guys:bart
You also forgot Will Grigsby who was a pretty good fighter who fought Carbajal on even terms, Lopez won a wide and clear decision over him.

Saying most of those guys were good fighters does the word a grave injustice imo.
