Ending a prolific and breakthrough year of 2009, the Baltic Boxing Union (BBU) board (via its pre-scheduled meeting) has finally announced its annual awards. Finnish forty-two year old grizzled veteran Kai Kauramaki was named the “BBU Fighter of the year”, while Pole Lukasz Maciec rightfully got the “BBU Prospect of the year” award. Bloody and non-stop eight-round action between Vasily Lepikhin and Roman Simakov was nominated as the “BBU Fight of the year”. Tomasz Babilonski was named the “BBU Promoter of the year”, while light heavyweight Pawel Glazewski and famed Russian promoter German Titov captured special nominees for their fruitful results in 2009. All in all, there have been seven (7) BBU title and six (6) BBU International title fights during this past year.
FIGHTER OF THE YEAR: KAI KAURAMÄKI (FIN)
Finnish ring warrior Kai Kauramäki is the 42-year old boxer who is currently the most experienced active Finnish professional boxer. Kauramäki made his comeback to the ring back in April after 13 months of absence due to a string of injuries. After a victory over Estonian Leonti Voronchuk, Kauramäki won his first BBU title fight although having taken the fight as a clear underdog against Mariusz Cendrowski (POL) at Polish boxer´s backyard. After one non-title bout Kauramäki defended his title on September at Pori just 30 kilometers away from his hometown. The sixth round stoppage of Czech-based Russian Magomed Abdurakhmanov was also the runner-up for BBU Fight of The Year. The combined record of these two boxers whom Kauramäki beat at his BBU title fights was (before Kauramäki fights) much respective 32–4–1 with 15 KOs. Kauramäki himself ended the year with the record of 17–15, 6 KOs, including four consecutive victories.
FIGHT OF THE YEAR: VASILY LEPIKHIN (RUS) SD 8 ROMAN SIMAKOV (RUS)
24-year old Vasily “Professor” Lepikhin took a very close decision victory over experienced countryman Simakov in a fight between two motivated and undefeated prospects, representing Russian top promoter German Titov´s stable. In one of the toughest fights in BBU history, reigning Russian champion Lepikhin faced the hardest test of his career thus far. Although Roman Simakov was down in the 3rd round, he was fighting back with the honorable zeal and vengeance during the course of the fight. The show was promoted by German Titov and Kirill Pchelnikov. With the victory Lepikhin improved to 7–0, 4 KOs, which also ended his year as he suffered some wrist injuries during the process. Simakov record is now 9-1-1 with 5 KOs.
PROSPECT OF THE YEAR: LUKASZ MACIEC (POL)
20-year old Lukasz Maciec fought seven (7) times this year and captured the BBU International light welterweight title in April, after the win over Latvian Konstantin Sakara. His biggest fight during the year of 2009 was a very close decision loss in a non-title fight against countryman Krzysztof Szot. In that match, Maciec was a real underdog but succeeded to make it a very close and entertaining match-up. Just one month after the fight with Szot, Lukasz Maciec was back in the ring to defend his BBU International belt successfully. After the successful title defense Maciec ended the year with the record of 9–1, 2 KOs. Maciec, who is scheduled to appear again as the BBU International champion in 2010, has shown real ability and some really significant improvements during the year of 2009 both with his boxing and its forth-forward outcome.
PROMOTER OF THE YEAR: TOMASZ BABILONSKI (POL)
Tomasz Babilonski promoted totally four BBU or BBU International title fights in 2009. Those fights were: Krzysztof Cieslak (POL) W8 Sergejs Savrinovics (LAT), Pawel Glazewski (POL) TKO5 Martins Kukuls (LAT), Krzysztof Glowacki (POL) W6 Lukasz Rusiewicz (POL) and Pawel Glazewski (POL) W6 Leo Tchoula (CAM/GER). Tomasz Babilonski with his Babilon Promotions is one of the most active Polish professional boxing promoters after having promoted nine (9) shows this year.
SPECIAL NOMINATION: PAWEL GLAZEWSKI (POL)
Pawel Glazewski (POL) had almost unbelievable 8 fights this year fighting twice victoriously for the BBU International title in light heavyweight division. After having won the title at the end of May, Glazewski defended his title belt after two non-title bouts. The victory in the title defense against German-based Camerooner kayo artist Leo Tchoula has been Glazewski´s best win so far. The former 3-time Polish senior amateur champion has proved to have the real ability to get into European rankings possibly during the next year. Glazewski is now 9–0, 3 KOs record.
SPECIAL NOMINATION: GERMAN TITOV (RUS)
German Titov promoted the BBU title fight for light heavyweight title at Moscow, Russia back in early July. The show contained extremely eight high-level professional boxing matches (including much-anticipated cruiserweight showdown between Grigory Drozd and Darnell Wilson) and, although not being the main event, the BBU title fight stole the show and got much international publicity.

Yea mate, its a good watch. The guy fought his heart out, lost almost everything in the end. Now it seems like the guy barely has any money left. Granted kick-boxing was never that huge. But the guy is the real deal.


Read on bokser.org about Szpila being in jail till July, when he will try to settle for some sort of compromise with the court. Lookin forward to seeing more of his fights.

And finally do you have anyone else in your stable that we should keep an eye out for?

I have one of the most talented light middle/middleweights I have ever worked with his name is Grzegorz Proksa 19 fights 19 wins 12 by stoppage he comes from a small city in Poland called Wegierska Gorka, he is 25yrs old he was the W.B.C. and I.B.F. youth champion he stays with me when in England as I am his only trainer. This guy is one to watch out for, a pleasure to train. Thank you for getting in contact and doing the article.

 

Proksa is wasting away.

He trained himself for his last and although he won by KO he looked sloppier than ever.Freddie Roach would take him to the highest of levels IMO.
