if you are really flexible, you can work on the jailbreak. It's a tough move but after hundreds of reps, it become smooth.
Awsome video Beebs. I am very much a noob to actual grappling. But as my half guards guff guys always get side control. I have become ok at defending subs from side control and stopping people getting the mount but I just usualy end up stuck for long periods.
Learn to bridge up - then shrimp your body to slip your knees in. It's hard to get out of once a guy is settled into side control - but if you know he's going there - bridge then shrimp your hip out as fast as you can to get him back to guard.
Probablly the most basic yet effective one. Just practicing the shrimp or umpa drills over and over agian really help you get this move down. Its such a great habit to get into as well everytime im Judo tossed or have my guard passed im either pushing up and shrimping in or bridging up and shrimping in, this of course will prevent a guy from holding you in side control long enough to score points 196 you gotta be quick with it.
I'll be honest with you, for no Gi, look no further than Fedors techniques. They require some explosiveness but they work. Here's a very easy technique that works against a LOT of people and it's very simple if you can bridge: Basically here's the video but this guy made it very complicated. Once you got that arm in you bridge up creating space(instead of his circling and un-circling ****) and skip out. Use that right hand to push him off of you as you push your self out from underneath him. Makes sure you start that pushing right in the middle of the bridge and not after you bridge. I've done it against brown belts and a smaller black belt(granted with gi they choke me out often once I remove that arm from defense) and I'm "blue belt".
I was gonna give him one right our of Fedor's book. Press the chin with the forarm. Start using your legs to push around the opposite way, then use the momentum to them them and end up in a decent side mount yourself. Though I promise you it will take tons out of you. It will work almost guaranteed. In fact any time I have trouble with any position the book really gets me there.
Thanks guys. I will try some of this out before the next class to try and get more comfortable. I can bridge ok. So I don't end up just defending mount and subs with my lame escapes, end up giving up mount because its much easier to escape from.
An important concept is, when you feel your partner beginning to pass your guard into side control, to stop them from controlling your head by blocking and gripping their bicep with your arm that's closest to them. Tuck your chin, get on your side facing them and never allow them his arm wrap behind your head. From there you can reestablish the guard, turn inwards onto your knees and attacks his legs or a number of other things.
Go for the Kimura and the Americana (keylock) , if they don't panic go for a straight up Mark Coleman neck crank, go back and forward if that doesn't work go for a body sangaku (triangle)
My top game is actually quite good for the level that I am at (i think), is just escapes from side control I was having issues with. Although I am not quite sure how I would go about applying a body trinagle from side control, either top or bottom.
Go for a kimura or keylock or a body triangle from under sidecontrol?? Personally I'd bridge, move my hips out to create space and pull guard or half guard and sweep.
I thought you asked what you finish when you are in side control. What you need to do when somone is in side control is to basically get their weight off your chest. best way to do this is shrimp push or kick them off. If they have you in a variation of muna gatame the easiest thing to do is put your leg between there leg and try and get your opponent into half guard or push on way so your opponent pushes that way and use his momentum against him bridge and roll or if your strong enough roll back and sit up and push.
