that's the thing though bro, you can't talk about what duran did above 135 and try to justify something here.......cotto, oscar and hatton barely tickled manny but yet a 130lb marquez had his head bobbled and wobbled from corner to corner.......and also got stopped by much lighter fighters, so please stop with those comparisons, it makes no sense....AT 135 chavez was also a monster that fought big punchers and never hit the deck, duran did....so come on bro, how can somebody easily say that duran beats the living daylights out of chavez........i aint even saying the same for chavez bro, **** duran was a hard headed caveman with tons of skill, but so was chavez bro.....which is why i say that this is a straight up pick'em fight and whoever would've trained harder in the gym, would've won this fight.....

You're exactly right. A prime Duran at 135 is the greatest lightweight of all time. A prime Whitaker is the only one who comes close.

chavez 1 demensional....AHHAAHAHAHAAHA you gotta be out your ****en mind......you wanna excuse duran by using his training as an excuse, **** you act as if chavez was a full blown christian that focused on boxing and boxing only....chavez was a druggy and a drunk and still managed to do what he did........the one trouble i can see duran having are his wide looping shots when on the inside, which is where i think chavez would shine...chavez's punches were more accurate and were placed with beautiful timing....not to mention chavez didnt waste any punches at all and would make duran pay to the body..........

i agree. it would be close either way. saying duran would ko chavez when nobody ever even came close is duran nuthuggery. duran didnt ko everybody he fought so why would you be so sure he could ko one of the greatest chins of all time.

    Duran moved better than Chavez.

    Duran was quicker than Chavez.

Duran was more crafty than Chavez.

You go on about body punching freddy-wak, saying that "Chavez was more accurate". I guess you never saw the body punches that Duran was landing on Leonard, triple left hooks to the body. Leonard is better than any fighter Chavez faced.

Duran fought better fighters in his first 75 bouts than Chavez did in his first 75 bouts.

At Lightweight, who would you pick from Chavez's record to beat Ken Buchanan or Dejesus?

it doesn't matter who on chavez's record would beat them, but i'm more than sure chavez would've beat them too........listen bro, i aint arguing that chavez would beat him, i'm arguing against those that think duran swipes him like nothing......both had tons of skills but you guys are forgetting 2 things that both of these men had that you just can't teach in the gym, HEART AND TOUGHNESS.......these men were relentless, and though kind of the same pressure style, both applied it very different.....duran at times seems like he holds a notch over chavez on styles alone, but chavez didnt need all that leverage that duran put on his punches, he didnt need all that head and waist movement just to come in to fight inside.....chavez, naturally had really heavy hands and pretty much anything he touched you with hurt.....the difference to me seems that duran looked as if he put everything in every single punch, chavez didnt....he didnt have to....chavez had really good head and waist movement too, but at times it didnt seem great cause he slapped most punches away with his gloves (the ol'skool way of slipping punches)......so i can easily say that chavez was better than duran in most things too, just depends on what you like and what you're use to seeing..........it's like saying that SRL's style, defense and offense is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than SWEET PEA'S and FLOYDS....styles make fights bro, and just cause one man dont do something in the same exact fashion doesn't mean that the other man is lesser skilled just cause he has his own way of doing it.......

Whitaker vs Duran at 135 is much more intriguing because Duran beats Chavez in every department. As great as Chavez was guys like Roberto are just in that "special" column.

This is a great post. :good

Finally a reasonable one at that and not Pac vs Ali. :patsch

This is a hard one...I think either Chavez or Duran win on a split decision going either way. Thats a tough call man.

Yup. The 1978 version of Duran versus the 1988 version of Whitaker is about as good of a matchup as could possibly be made.

Duran would quit in the 7th rd and say someone slipped him ex-lax in his water bottle.

Chavez had a great chin, but he can get hurt, he was hurt by Taylor despite his face not showing it.

Just think of it this way, Duran is like 3X more skilled then Meldrick Taylor. Taylor was faster but that was about it. Duran at 135 had like a 95% KO percentage. Duran in his prime at 135 or 140 would brutalize Chavez.
