How good were the British & European Champs (1950-75)?

    Not much coverage was given in the United States of the European and British Champions 1950-1975.

    Just how really good were these fighters?

    British fighters dominated boxing for 200 years, from 1700 to 1900, then something went badly wrong.

    Some were very good and won World Titles (before all the multiple titles) in addition to the regional belts. Here are a few that have to be considered top notch.

    1. Ken Buchanan
    2. Howard Winstone
    3. John Stracey
    4. Joe Bugner
    5. Chris Finnegan
    6. Kevin Finnegan
    7. John Conteh
    8. Alan Minter
    9. Jean Claude Bouttier
    10. Several others as well...

    As good as today's beltholders imo. Many were good enough to beat the American top contenders but rarely got the chance to prove it. Hard to say really but imo the European title was as much worth as one belt is today in this time period and earlier.

    A lot of them are up there as some of the finest boxers ever in their weights. Most notably Ken Buchanan and Walter McGowan

    A lot of older guys that saw Charnley live reckon he was better than Buchanan.

    Not sure i'd agree with that, but he's a seriously underrated fighter who was quite poorly managed from what i've read.Thrown into a lot of fights at short notice against bigger opponents etc.

    He's my old mans favorite fighter. I have a couple of his fights but not the Ring FOTY against Brown.

    Rocky Mattioli, Bruno Acari, & Gratein Tonna were European Champs and also World Class fighters. Mattioli and Acari were world champions as well.

    The British title back in them days meant more than today and the standard was higher. British champ in them days was usually best at the weight and you wouldn't get a World (undisputed) in the day title shot without at least being British champ.
    Same goes for European.
