Prime Reid vs Prime Francis (before Francis suffered his shoulder injury). Always thought this couldve been a real good match, Dean was looking like he was going places, and was a natural puncher with some skills, against Reid a once good counter puncher who could hit with authority and when in the mood was very hard to beat. Who wins?
Arnie will know better then me, but I think Reid had the power to stop him. Francis clearly was a little suspect round them whiskers.
It would have been a good match up. (Also Francis V Wharton would have been good, as I feel Henry is one of those fighters who were not quite world class, but still a quality fighter and he's often overlooked.) Francis had some good skills and could bang a bit, but Reid had a great chin (I'm not counting the Lacy fight, when Robin seemed to resign to a "couldn't be arsed" attitude after a dubious build up to the fight). I think it would actually be pretty close, and maybe go to a split decision. I think Reid would just nick it though with his counter punching. Similar to Calzaghe-Reid where you could make a case for either/or. Funny how things turn out. I remember around 1993 that Reid and Adrian Dodson were tipped to be the next coming of the Eubank-Benn type era. After that, it was supposed to be Francis and David Starie. Never quite worked like that though did it?
Francis had more talent and was a more robust puncher at his best. He was just better than Reid. Francis stoppage on the flat-footed Robin, teeing off.
Robin Reid always !! Robin Reid was too sneaky and cagey, and had some classy boxing skills, i think he'd wear Francis down and stop him or just win a wide UD
I've been saying the same thing for years. I think this 'couldn't be arsed' attitude became more evident after that first 'knockdown', where you could see him thinking that he was getting shafted abroad again. As for the for the fight itself, i'm suprised so many are so sure that it would be a clear cut win for Robin. I would've hate to have seen this match up, because both were among my boyhood faves. Personally I think Dean would've nicked a close & possibly disputed ud.
Tough one. I would have said Reid until a while back. About 3 years ago I trained down in Bristol with Francis and the guy was an absolute ****ing machine. Would have liked to see him steer cleer of injuries and I think he could have done a lot better for himself if he had done. Was disappointed in the way that he went in Prizefighter but thats the way it goes sometimes :-(
