I supported Hatton big time, but the Maussa performance was not special. Maussa also beat a very timid Harris. Hatton wanted a unification at the time. Cotto simply wasn't a big enough name and PBF had vacated - the WBA title was the one for Hatton and he did the business as part of a great, great year. but the Maussa win shouldn't be overvalued either. Great finish, though.
I went for the Castillo win. The manner is what it was done as well, you don't see those type of stoppages often. Plus Castillo was still on his knee for a good while after he was counted out.
Yes, my overly-ambitious friend that is true. However, this 36 year old just recently returning with only one shoulder, had not been out of the ring for two years. He fought Judah in 2001, Tackie in 2002, Leija in 2003, Mitchell in 2004, and finally Hatton in 2005. And also the fight with Mitchell, just so nobody blows it off , was for the Ring Magazine belt and status as the No. 1 fighter at that weight. So there you go.
and the 'prime' argument gets ruined once again. The 'physical prime' that lost to Phillips? Yeah, I reckon I agree. The 'technical prime' of the Tyszu that emerged out of the shadow of that defeat? I don't think so. Tyszu pre- and pos-t-Phillips are two differentfighters. Technically, Tyszu was never better than against Mitchell. And Hatton basically beat that version. Prime is a silly word - is it physical or technical prime? do certain sections of a fighter vcareer mean he stacks up better against certain opponents at certain times? Tyszu was number one at the weight. Hatton beat him.
Ricky has done damn well for himself in all honesty beating that lot. He should have no shame in losing to Floyd and Manny, he's still a very good fighter.
1 Tszyu-despite the age and incactivity Kostya was still a top fighter, this is Hatton's best win. 2- Castillo-again, despite the age and wear, Castillo was still a tough fighter and brought a formidable pedigree with him, throw in the manner Hatton ate him up then this is next 3 Mallignaggi- Hatton won impressively against, this time, a prime fighter who was/is a good fighter. 4 Collazo-The closeness of the fight puts this one below Mallignaggi but this was a win over a top 5-10 fighter in a higher weight class. I thought Hatton deserved the win here as well. 5 Urango-solid but nothing spetacular fighter and Hatton didn't look overly imnpressive either but got the win. This shows Hatton has some good wins but his resume isn't very deep. He should have never been in the top pfp talks like he was for a while but he has had a good career.
He had beat the **** out of Sharmba Mitchell a few months before. The Tszyu win was easily his best and whatever some people say was a fantastic performance which resulted in him getting fighter of the year by Ring.
I actually don't believe that Tszyu's age of 35, or short retirement of 1 year and 10 months to be exact (just short of 2 years between Leija and Mitchell II) is the main reason he lost, although it may have been a contributing factor. Tszyu lost to Hatton mainly because of Hatton's high workrate. If you look at Tszyu's win over Oktay Urkal, Urkal had outhustled Tszyu in the fight. Tszyu has to set up his punches. Tszyu also didn't seem to prepare properly for Hatton. Also, Hatton looked at his best. It's been a while since I've seen the fight, but I'm not going to bring up the holding by Hatton. At the time, I didn't think that was the main reason Tszyu lost, although that's another excuse that gets brought up.
