Also from what I remember my dad used to tell me that the reason they made .45's was to stop very determined opposition in their tracks. When the Americans were fighting the Muslims in southern Philippines, they couldn't stop the locals from somehow charging them with swords even though they were shooting them with normal caliber bullets, so the .45 was made to make sure whoever they shot got stopped.
