Cuba vs Puerto Rico, will Gamboa vs Juanma create that rivalry ?

Even though I'm Puerto Rican I have never seened Vasquez Jr fight before so I can't comment on that but we need to see Rigondeux in with better comp before anyone says he is able to beat a world class fighter and I can care less what his amateur accolades are. But Gamboa is one of my favorites and I see him beating Lopez.

But I doubt this rivalry can go on for years and years like the PR/Mex rivalry because there's still no consistency to see if Cubans can produce top notch world class fighters on a daily basis like Puerto Rico and Mexico.

 

From my perspective I have seen a rivalry between Puerto Ricans and Cubans. However, I don't see it becoming bigger the Aztecas and the Islanders. In order for this fight to be huge would require a lot of effort on the part of Arum. Personally, the only household name is Juan Manuel Lopez; although, Gamboa is the more polished fighter. I think they need another HBO show before this fight happens.

Surprisingy, In Mexico we view the Cuban's as brothers contrary to what some people think.

i will keep lara away from martinez from now... rather to see him against angulo or cintron...martinez is a very tough nail
angulo is tough but he will be coming forward and eating lefts all night, i've never been impress by cintron

 

but dont take for granted gamboa beating lopez..juanma will adjust at 126 because is better for his frame and if he learn how to keep the distance can give gamboa some trouble

 

i dont take that freddy seriously, to him only mexicans matter
he's never been impress by gamboa or rigo because he doesnt understand other boxing style that the "bullie mexican go and kill" he doesnt understand other styles... so dont listen to him....also he is a lit afraid of cubans taking over from 122 and up.

 

He may bebiased but he does bring up an interesting point on the styles of Cuban fighters.

Again I didn't AGREE with it...but it was interesting to say the least.

This is coming from an Australian with no experience of the situation, but isn't the rivalry between Mexico and PR in large part driven by the national pride of the public or boxing fanbase? And aren't these cubans considered traitors by their countrymen in many respects. Or is there an expat boxing fanbase in the US big enough to rival that of Puerto Rico? And is there enough cuban boxers defecting to keep the rivalry going at a grass-roots level?

 

Im not Cuban, nor have I ever been to Cuba (although I really want to), but...the 1950s and 60s Cubans and those that came afterward seem to be night and day different. Looking at the history and from my interactions Ive made my own conclusions, but its an interesting dynamic.

 

It would be a great rivalry, but what im seeing more as of now is Philippines vs Puerto Rico. Damn could the small island of 4 million get a break with all these rivalries, damn I love boxing.:good

 

It would be great if they can have a trilogy.
