Hey! I'm a beginner (been taking classes for 3 months) and sparred for the first time 2 weeks ago against a guy around 6'4 (I'm 5'11). So me being very new to boxing I find it hard to fight this taller guy who has more experience than me. I'm trying to stay out of his range and stepping away from his punches, but when I go in to take shots, him having more reach, I have to step in a good bit with my jab. And when I do step in, he comes at me with his jab and right, how do I avoid getting hit when I'm stepping in? Because he's kinda stopping me dead in my tracks and I can't fire much punches after. Thanks!
So I should always be waiting to evade his jab then step in and punch? I shouldn't be starting encounters?
Depends a little bit on your style IMO. You could also use alot of head movement so he can't land too cleanly & bob & weave your way inside to work if you can.
You really think you can box to a strategy after one weeks training? If I were you i'd work on blocking punches rather then trying to win spars.
