I have him ranked under these guys even though I'm a big fan. I wonder if he has another big win left in him. I've been hoping he could make it down to lightweight again and fight Valero for a unification bout.
I posted this about a year ago. Walker didn't even belong in the ring with JMM. That was 2001. Barrera was taking out Hamed, Morales was establishing himself at 126, Marquez was fighting Jonnie Walker. Great.
Very cool of Marquez to check him out after the fight, he must have been worried when Johnnie's head bounced off the canvas like that.
Johnny Walker has made many a man crumble in defeat. He's taken more undefeated scalps then any other fighter on record. The fact that Marquez was able to defeat Johnny Walker without the benefit of a lot of water was a true testament to his ability. This was supposed to lead to a fight against a guy named James Beam but Marquez decided to go to Indonesia for a fight with some no name guy.
Holy ****, what a resume (of losses)! :shock: Chop-Chop Corley, both Peterson brothers, Nate Campbell, John Murray (still undefeated, with some good British-level wins), Roman Martinez, Jose Miguel Cotto, The Contender's Gary Balleto, Jesus Chavez, Junior Jones, and Juan Manuel Marquez. That is a LOT of A through B- level talent. It appears he didn't win many rounds against any of them (or in his career, period) :yep - but if that guy ever writes a book on the sport, everybody should buy it. If he opens a gym, everybody in the area should dump their current coach and join up. What a wealth of world-class experience for a guy who doesn't appear to be even close to world class to have.
Now, hold on here Addie. I rank Marquez under Barrera and Morales too but let's not act like MAB didn't fight guys like Angel Rosario after hitting the world stage or that some of his scalps like Tapia weren't past it. And I do think JMM beat Pacquiao in their second fight. Not that I think it was a robbery or anything.
Out of all the names you could have thrown out of the hat, you throw out Angel Rosario? His comeback fight? He took a year off after his second loss to Junior Jones, he'd already taken out former world champions Kennedy Mckinney, Jesse Benevides. My only point was that there's no stock in comparing the fighters ages because both Barrera and Morales was fighting better competition . Comparing who they were all fighting in 2001-2002 is indicative of that.
Whereas my point was, why knock Marquez for fighting low levelers when MAB has done his share too. And why pick on the Casamayor win where Joel was coming off a very solid victory over Katsidis and neither were in their prime and Marquez was stepping into a new weight class.
Who said I was knocking Marquez? That was your assumption. Perhaps I think it's pathetic that whilst the other two are out there on the world stage, Marquez was still fighting these types of guys. I'm not blaming Marquez, but people who rank Juan ahead of his contemporaries haven't thought things through. We aren't about to get in a debate about their resumes, there's a clear distinction. Casamayor was significantly more past his prime than Marquez was, having fought the best Lightweights of his era over the last decade prior to fighting Juan. In actual fact, how can anyone properly determine whether or not Marquez was even past his prime? ...His career best performance came against Pacquiao in 2008.
