It actually isn't as wide as people like to think in terms of 'names'. But I'd say Lopez's defences, superior punching power, chin (and therefore H2H ability) see him out in front. I probably wouldn't put Cotto in a top 150, whereas Lopez would probably make it. HOWEVER; Miguel gets a lot of unfair criticism IMO. He has a nice resume, although he's a fighter who's weaknesses are clear to see now. When you break it down you realise how good a fighter he is. he's probably a fighter that will gain more respect in the years to come. His problem is that he never focused on one part of his game and wasn't well-versed enough to be an all rounder. Lopez was good at what he did; annihilating people.
Lopez is still higher...but how far apart they are depends on how you like to rank. For me its pretty close at the moment. Danny has Olivares and Miguel has Mosley...Ruben is the better scalp and the method of victory makes it an even better achievement in terms of top shelf wins. Neither guy has long spells of dominance...and though Miguel's two divvy exploits gives him p4p points (as would a belt at 154 if he can do it), man for man I still like Danny's record better...plus I rate him a little higher H2H like flea because he has truly fight changing power. Kind of hard to rate Cotto right now whilst his career is ongoing...Still one of my fav active fighters, so I imagine when all is said and done I will rate him a little bit higher then most.
I can vouch for this train of thought. I like Miguels style. He's a jack of all trades and master of none, susceptible to pressure fighters, but when you consider the weaknesses some fighters have had he can't be all that bad. 10 years post retirement we'll be able to gauge just how good he is/was. As I say, even on 'names' his resume is decent, it's only his obvious weaknesses that mean I can't rank him that high. But certainly above Hatton, and the Mosley win may become even more impressive as the coming months draw in:deal
If they were the same weight id take Lopez in HTH matchup, Think Torres and Cotto except Lopez would finish off Cotto and has a much better chin than TOrres.
I've never seen a more xciting fighter or one punch fighter than "Little Red:., the hardest puncher (w? Cuevas) I saw in my lifetime. Da, there were exciting fighter:hi:s in the 70s.
Danny Lopez is #2 on my list of all time favorites. Only Arguello is ahead of him in the #1 spot. Cotto is very high on my list of current favorites. Little Red racked up one of the longest KO streaks in boxing history before meeting his former stablemate Bobby Chacon in a title eliminator. Little Red was no match for The School Boy. Danny came back from the Chacon beating, traveled to Ghana about 2 years later, and beat the WBC champ David Kotey in front of an estimated 100,000 Kotey partisans. The 21 fight KO streak; The win over Oliveras; The Kotey-Ghana affair; 10 succesful title defenses; 27 rounds with Salvador Sanchez. In addtion, I work in geriatric care, and a lot of my patients can't even remember that their underwear goes inside their pants, not outside, but they still remember Little Red! We'll have to see what Cotto does in the future, but if he retired right now, at about the same age Danny retired, Lopez gets a much higher rating.
I think it is clear that Lopez is overall a better fighter...bu the comparison is abit unfair to Miguel. Miguel is a quality fighter just not a Great.
I see your point, I think Miguel is starting to become underrated when you look at his resume its actually pretty good, If he were to retire today i think he could sneak into the HOF one day, I said Hatton should get in and I think Cotto is better than him. IF he beats Foreman for another title he should be a lock.
Everyone musta forgotten Lopez rollin on the canvass in pain, cryin for help when he got bullied by the smaller but heavier Bobby Chacon. I'd favour Cotto over Lopez at any time period.
