Fellas, Has their been another fighter in the history of boxing who uses "The Head" as such a weapon as Evander Holyfield does? I am reviewing the "Holy-Holmes" title fight of 1992 right now as I write and I saw how Lou Duva cried ref 'Mills Lane' a river of tears after round 6, after his boy Holy was cut on the right eye by an accidental Holmes elbow after Holmes barely missed a wicked right hand to Holy's face.... Anyway, I noticed hear on the tape that Holy was using his head against Holmes big time, but Holmes was cool enough not to whine like a baby or lose his cool like a moronic Mike Tyson did later in 1997.... Holmes is a proven seasoned pro....... Holmes did well in falling short on points against the much younger and possibly "Juiced" Evander Holyfield in 1992 in Las Vegas, and Larry Holmes gets my respect for fighting a smart fight and holding his own against the champion Holyfield..... Again, it is gross on how blatant obvious Holy comes in with his head tilted downward looking to butt his man hardcore...... Q: Where or when did Holy learn or figure out his forehead could be a weapon?? It IS a weapon....... :firedeal MR.BILL:bbb
Hopkins is good with it. If you can do it without getting caught, more power to ya. As long as the ref is not biased.
Yeah, Holyfield and Hopkins are good at the "intentional accidental headbutt". Casamayor uses it a lot, but is not quite as skilled at hiding how deliberate it is. Against Katsidis, that **** was obvious. Guys like Tyson and Golota...they needed work on making it look accidental. Against Golota and Ruddock, Tyson's use of his head was pretty obvious. And Golota against Nicholson? :rofl Nicholson's reaction was comedy too.
More recently, Nate Campbell and Tim Bradley seem to bump noggins a lot. Before I get virtual-jumped, I'm not saying they do it on purpose.
dude, i was watching that fight over christmas and only watch the first 6 rounds thinking "what's everyone bitching about?!". then i watched the last 6 rounds last week....mother****er was like junkyard dog in there, he was throwing headbutts like a french world cup player
lol it was still a great performance. I thought Kessler was coming on a little in the second half though. I don't consider taht fight as much of a beat down as everyone else does.
Not that is matters anymore but, looking at the post fight stats, Larry Holmes actually did a lot better against Holyfield in 1992 then George Foreman did with his stats in his epic 1991 title try / shot...... Holmes also escaped much more "Unmarked" against Holy as well........ STILL! That sum ***** Holyfield was looking to butt the **** outta Larry Holmes from the 4th round on......... I saw Holy dipping and tilting his head into Holmes chest and face as often as possible... Wicked..... MR.BILL
Larry Holmes used his elbow to cut Holyfield in that fight, its funny how you forget to bring that one up. Holyfields headbutting is a bit of his style along with the other fighters style, in the Tyson fight, the first one, Tyson caused that headbutt, the rematch different story but there was no sign Holyfield did that to gain an advantage. The Rahman fight, that was actually Rahmans fault when Evander got Rahman in trouble Rahman was on the ropes as Evander went to work, you can see Rahman bounce off the ropes and the heads came together. I can honestly say that Holyfields style causes some of these clashes of heads, to me I dont see him trying to use the head as a weapon he just does what all the well schooled fighters do, when you get inside your going to want to protect yourself and Holyfield, if you watch the 2nd bowe fight, Manny stewart instructs him to put his head on Bowes Shoulder on the inside..... Why do you think he would instruct that? simple answer, to avoid getting hit with Upper cuts.... and since that fight every big man evander has fought, he has used the same tactic
Ive observed that the fighters that do headbutt generally have pretty good chins, and I can suppose that they are simply the kind of people that have a "hard head". The two would go hand in hand. They also dont cut easily generally Not that any of that is particularly insightful Having done boxing and muay thai on and off as a hobby for fitness, I do know how easy it is to clash heads with your opponent when falling in. And how effective it can be. Some people absolutely hate clashing heads If you got the head and the chin for it, taking it a step further and learning to headbutt isnt much of stretch
Andre Ward will usurp Evander's spot as the greatest head butter of all time real soon. I am anxiously awaiting the day when Ward fights someone who isn't afraid to plant an elbow across his face.
