He was almost 25 years old, was a top 3 JWW, and had a title. They been talking about Cotto fighting Mayweather for about a year at that point. I would think that he had some intention of fighting Mayweather being that he showed up to the fight.

When you look back at his career...there are a lot of fights that SHOULD have happened. The name that someone of his stature and skill COULD have fought is almost criminal. Obviously one cannot fight everyone...but his choices other then the guys listed below left a lot to be desired. This by no means HE was the reason they were not made. But there are just too many names and it gets bigger.

    Stevie Johnson
    Acelino Freitas
    Joel Casamayor
    Kostya Tszyu

All the talented fighters around him...shame.

Talking about when he was challenged while at 140. That's when he first called him out.

The fight didnt have much significance when they were both at 140. When they both had a belt at WW and after Cotto beat Mosley and Mayweather beat Hatton there was no reason why the fight couldnt have been made.

Lance, that was summer/fall of 2005. Cotto was going on 25, had a WBO title, and was a top 3 JWW.

Well, Floyd did retire briefly. It's hard to fight someone who's not fighting anyone. Not only that, but Cotto's own people said that they preferred a fight with Hoya after Mayweather beat Hatton.

well everyone around oscars weight wanted to fight him and i dont blame them. The pay day is too much.

Both Mayweather and Cotto didnt do much to make this fight happen.

I'm pretty sure it was Mayweather who said he was too green...

This is what Cotto said: "He wanted the chance. He beat Gatti and Tackie. He's the right opponent for this moment," says Cotto.

That's why Mayweather needs to fight Mosley and Pac. He'll always get **** for not fighting Cotto or Margo. However, if he can't fight them now, why not fight the two guys who beat the **** out of them? If Mayweather were to beat those two, his resume and accomplishments above 135 lbs would be pretty impressive. Considering that's the part of his career that has been criticized the most, I don't see how he could not take on these challenges.

Exactly. This 'pre-margo' Cotto is the same guy who would have been beaten by the faster, more skilled, counter punching, pot shotting PBF.
